Important Terms • Application • the process of applying to a college/university • Admissions • The total amount of students who are allowed to enroll in a college or university • Enrollment • the amount of students who are allowed to take classes at a college or university • Open Enrollment • When there is no limit to the amount of people admitted

  3. Most Colleges have Limited Enrollment • Not all who apply are admitted • Not all who are admitted decided to enroll • Some choose to go to a different school

  4. College vs. University • Colleges have an assortment of degrees in one specific area such as liberal arts • Colleges are smaller • Universities have a collection of colleges • College of education, college of law, college of business etc. • You graduate from one of the specific colleges

  5. What are the main types of tertiary schools? • Community College • Public Colleges • Private College • Private University • Public University

  6. Community College • Much less expensive than a private college • Mostly only have 2 year associates degrees • Mostly have open enrollment (does not reject applicants)

  7. Private Colleges • Are more expensive than public or community colleges • Not affiliated with the government—government does not fund the school • Most of them have a specialization (i.e. preforming arts, liberal arts, etc.) • Can have a religious affiliation • Limited enrollment

  8. Public Universities • Less expensive than private universities • More expensive than colleges* (note: this depends if the college is private or not) • Are funded by the government • Most have limited enrollment

  9. Private Universities • More expensive than public universities • More expensive than colleges* (note: this depends if the college is private or not) • Are not funded by the government • Can have a religious affiliation • Most have limited enrollment
