  2. 1. Introduction • Spreadsheet is an excellent tool to develop student’s critical thinking. • In this project, I will ask students to use spreadsheet to create a chart and explore the relationship between BMI (body mass index) and blood pressure. • The goals of this activity are based on the new curriculum standard of Chinese Ministry of Education. (http://www.being.org.cn/ncs)

  3. 2. Target learners • China high school students Grade one (equal to Grade 10 in K12 system)

  4. 3. Objectives Student will be able to: • Collect data according to given topic • Use excel to create chart • Analysis curve shape in the chart and describe the relationship between two variables.

  5. 4. Tools • Computer for each student • Microsoft excel program on all computers

  6. 5. Procedure • Step1: • Before class, have each student collect the data about weigh, height and blood pressure from neighbors or parents by carrying out a survey.

  7. Survey Sample

  8. 5. Procedure • Step2: • Have the students type the data on Excel

  9. 5. Procedure • Step3: • Teach the student how to calculate BMI and how to show it in excel

  10. Sample Relationship between Blood pressure and BMI • BP BMI height weigh • 110 17.35 1.78 55 • 118 20.29 1.81 66.5 • 122 23.30 1.67 65 • 126 24.67 1.72 73 • 130 25.76 1.66 71 • 135 26.22 1.73 78.5 • 138 26.43 1.69 75.5 • 145 26.97 1.77 84.5 • 166 31.24 1.58 78 • 177 33.53 1.62 88 • 180 34.64 1.58 86.5

  11. 5. Procedure • Step4: • Have the student create a chart with the data they just input and show them the curve shape in the chart.

  12. 5. Procedure • Step5: Have the student answer question like: • When the value of the BMI becomes larger, what will happen to the value of blood pressure? • If high blood pressure easily led to disease and excise can decrease BMI, what’s the reasonable activity for people?

  13. 6. Evaluation • Data collecting: 20% • Chart creating: 40% • Question answering: 40%

  14. Thank you

  15. About BMI • Starvation: less than 15.0 • Anorectic: less than 17.5 • Underweight: less than18.5 • Ideal: from 18.5 to 25 • Overweight: from 25 to 30 • Obese: from 30 to 40 • Morbidly Obese: greater than 40
