  2. Foreign words in English • déjà vu- already seen • faux pas- a socially awkward or tactless act • du jour- made for a particular day e.g. soup du jour • bon voyage - Good trip • alma mater- a school, college, or university which one has attended

Foreign words in English • cum laude - with distinction e.g. graduated cum laude • femme fatale- a seductive woman who lures men into dangerous or compromising situations • esprit de corps- the common spirit existing in the members of a group and inspiring enthusiasm • Verbatim - copied word for word • E pluribus unum- Out of many, one, it is a phrase on the Seal of the United States

Persuasive Devices • Bandwagon - When someone adopts a popular point of view for the primary purpose of recognition and/or acceptance by others • loaded words – words which have strong emotional overtones or connotations, and which evoke strongly positive or negative reactions • Testimonial - using an individual who has tried a product and been satisfied with it to favorably endorse the product

Persuasive Devices • name-calling - the use of offensive names especially to win an argument or to induce rejection or condemnation (as of a person or project) without objective consideration of the facts • plain folks - A Plain Folks argument is one in which the speaker presents him or herself as an Average Joe, a common person who can understand and empathize with a listener's concerns. • Snob appeal - the attributes of something that appeal to people who associate those qualities with social or intellectual superiority; a thing's attractiveness to snobs.
