  2. KEY ISSUE • Access to medical staff to insert PICC • Waiting List - 15 days • Key drivers for implementation: • Minimise waiting times - facilitate timely access for patients • Provide trained, accredited and competent personnel • Provide a consistent service for referral teams and clients

  3. KEY CHANGES IMPLEMENTED • Nurses and Radiographers trained to insert PICCs • 2 policies to support practice • Insertion of a Peripherally inserted Central Catheter (PICC) in the DMI • Accreditation process for Registered Nurses and Radiographers to perform PICC Insertions in the DMI • Development & implementation of: • PICC resource module – theoretical assessment • Self – Directed Learning Package ( PICC insertion x 5 supervised by competent practitioner) • PICC database • Check list criteria - follow up phone call post insertion • Difficulty rating scale • PICC insertion labels for medical record

  4. OUTCOMES SO FAR • 6 staff trained in PICC insertions (4 nurses & 2 radiographers) • 120 cases performed • 95% success rate • Zero complication rate • Waiting list reduced from 15 to 4 days • DMI Quality Improvement Award - 2005

  5. KEY SUCCESS FACTORS • Establish a stream lined PICC service • One policy across all service lines • Referral processes established • Increase staff knowledge via education programs • Products available • Timely referral processes • Device management in clinical units
