  1. The Lonesome Valley School District is starting a Concert Band! • A Webquest for: • 11-12 Grade Music Students • College Music Majors IntroductionTaskProcessEvaluationConclusionExit

  2. Introduction Congratulations! You have been hired as the new band director for the Lonesome Valley School District. The Lonesome Valley School District has decided to start a concert band to benefit the students of the last town in the country that does not have a band program. The school board has decided to provide you with an initial budget to purchase the necessary instruments for the band. Your “Mission” – should you choose to accept it – is to investigate the costs of the instrumentation and to make recommendations for purchases while remaining within the allotted budget. 3. Task Your task as the new band director for the Lonesome Valley School District is: • To research the cost of each individual instrument that can be in the band. • Using the Band Instrument Budget Calculator, determine what instruments are to be purchased and the associated costs of the instruments. • Prepare a written budget report to be presented at the school board meeting for approval showing the instruments to be purchased and total expense to the district for these instruments. 4. Process The following steps will guide you in your process to outfit the new concert band! Look at the Band Instrument Budget Calculator. It contains a list of concert band instruments – some that are required for the band and some that are optional, but nice to have. Use the following websites to get an initial feel for prices and quality of the individual instruments. Remember, most instruments are valued by their quality – beginner, intermediate, advanced and pro – and by their brand. You can certainly buy more beginner level instruments or you can buy fewer better quality instruments at the intermediate level – it’s your choice and budget. Da Capo (D.C.) Next page Fine

  6. Process … Once you have looked at the websites that sell instruments, look at the following websites to get a feel for the different individual instrument manufacturers to aid in your decision process. Please note that these are only a few of the more well known instrument manufacturers. You should also search for and visit the websites of any other manufacturer for which you might be interested. 7. Process … • For this exercise, make your decisions based on the instrument prices that you find on the websites. However, keep in mind that some businesses provide discounts for volume purchases and/or educational purchases should you ever find yourself in this position. • Once you have an idea of what instruments you want to purchase, use the Band Instrument Budget Calculatorto keep track of the number of each instrument to purchase as well as the individual cost per instrument. • For each instrument – required or optional – in the Budget Calculator, enter the “# to buy” and the “cost per instrument” in the row for the appropriate instrument – the blue shaded columns. Keep in mind you have to buy at least the minimum number of required instruments. You can also purchase any or all of the optionalinstrument as long as you are within budget. You may also purchase more than the minimum number of instruments if your budget allows! Da Capo (D.C.) Next page Previous Page Fine

  8. Process … • The Budget Calculator will calculate and provide: - A total cost per instrument - A total Overall cost - Whether you are Over or Underbudget - A graph of the relation of each instrument’s dollars to the total dollars spent • Once you have made all of your choices, write a 3 page persuasive report providing a breakdown of expenditures by instrumentto include: • - the instrument - the instrument brand - manufacturer - the instrument quality level – beginner, intermediate, etc - the number of this instument purchased - the instrument cost – both individual and total. 9. Process … • You can copy the chart from the Band Instrument Budget Calculator and paste it into your report. Most important: Be sure to explain your reasoning for all of your purchases. 11. Conclusion Congratulations! You have just learned how to investigate and outfit an entire concert band with new instruments and stay within a budget. I know that you succeeded – I’ve read your reports! I know that it was a “trying” experience, but the students who will now be able to come through the band program at Lonesome Valley School District will be much better for having the opportunity to experience the lifelong music skill developed in your band.
