  1. livesimply: a challenge “All Catholics are called to act… Catholics of the richer lands must play their part to help development. They should be in the forefront of those who fight to build a better world, based on justice and equality.” Pope Paul VI, On the development of peoples, para.81

  2. In 1967 Pope Paul VI wrote a powerful document called, “On the development of peoples”. Here are some of the things Pope Paul said: It challenged everyone, particularly Catholics, to take responsibility for the world’s problems and to act.

  3. Live simply “Having more and more must not become an end in itself... exclusive concentration on having more means being less.” “Love, friendship, prayer and contemplation are necessary values. Without such gifts people can make no proper progress from what is less to what is more genuinely human.” On the development of peoples, para.19-20

  4. Live sustainably “God has made the earth and all that it contains for all to share. The earth’s goods must be divided fairly and this right of everyone to a just share comes first. …All other rights must help, not block, this basic right of every human being.” On the development of peoples, para.22

  5. Live in solidarity “Christ said: ‘I have compassion on the crowd.’ (Mark 8:2) To be a Christian means to share this love of Christ when faced with so much misery.” On the development of peoples, para.74 “Christians of every kind can work together, more and more, to build a better world; a world made human by the end of selfishness and pride; a world made human by the reign of real family love.” On the development of peoples, para.82

  6. 40 years after Pope Paul’s document, the livesimply challenge was launched. Already thousands of people have joined this challenge: To live simply, sustainably and in solidarity with people who are poor

  7. Are you up to the challenge? Not being obsessed with money, fashion, fame, the latest gadget? Can you live simply? Appreciating simple gifts of life like a meal with friends, a hug from family, laughter, good health, time to pray and reflect, a beautiful sunset?

  8. Are you up to the challenge? Can you live sustainably? Caring for creation, considering how your actions affect others, today and in the future? Not wasting resources, but living within the Earth’s means?

  9. Are you up to the challenge? Recognising them as your sisters and brothers, standing beside them, sharing your gifts with them, praying for them, defending their right to a fair share of the world’s resources? Can you live in solidarity with people who are poor?

  10. You? If you are up to the challenge, log onto www.livesimply.org.uk and join others in taking a community challenge. “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” Archbishop Oscar Romero
