  2. The Task • You are a guest speaker invited to give an inspirational presentation on your role as an explorer/scientist in Antarctica. The purpose of the presentation is to demonstrate to the audience (Goal) the importance of your role in Antarctica and how you can inspire them to display stewardship for our world. Your presentation will be delivered to your class and teachers.

  3. A Brief Biography Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton was born on the 15th of February, 1874, in Kilkea in Ireland. He was one of the main explorers in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. He went to Antarctica several times, each with a different mission. His first mission was in 1901 to 1904. It was called the Discovery Expedition and his role was the Third Officer. His second experience was

  4. in 1907 as the Leader of the Nimrod Expedition. His third trip to Antarctica was in 1909 where he and three other companions worked together and made it to the Farthest Southlatitude. Because of this, he was knighted by King Edward VII at his return to England. When the race to the South Pole ended in 1912, Ernest Shackleton yet again, went to Antarctica and to what is known as the greatest object in Antarctic Journeying, he crossed thecontinent from sea to sea, but reaching the pole first. All of these

  5. travels to Antarctica had troubles and problems, but they also had happiness and joy. He then died in the South Georgia Island at the age of 47, when he was on his 5th expedition. His wife soon buried him there, as Ernest Shackleton requested.

  6. What work has Ernest Shackleton done in Antarctica Ernest Shackleton had dreams to achieve when he was in Antarctica. One of them was to cross Antarctica by foot starting at the Weddell Sea via the pole to reach the Ronce Sea Shelf. But what he achieved was very different. He announced a voyage to Antarctica on New Years Day in 1914. He left on the 8th of August that same year. It was a long travel, but finally,

  7. on the 5th of November, they reached the South Georgia Island.

  8. In 1915, his ship called the Endurance got stuck in the ice! The crew and himself had to get all their equipment and the dogs out of the ship. They had to take care of the dogs, so they built little igloos for them. Until the ship fell apart {the ice froze the ship and fell into pieces}, they tried to entertain themselves. Just 15 minutes after the ship broke, the ice it was stuck in fell as well. They unfortunately had to rebuild the dogs igloos and get everything we needed from the floating boat.

  9. They traveled and traveled until the 9th of April, 1916, when they reached Elephant Island. They then had to launch lifeboats and sail to the South Georgia Island. In May, we finally spotted shore.

  10. Advantages • Being remembered as one of the main figures in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration • Seeing the beautiful land nearly 5 times

  11. Disadvantages • Walking on foot across Antarctica as the surface of the ice was uneven • The loss of there ship, the Endurance • The weather conditions

  12. How was Ernest Shackleton a model of stewardship? • Ernest Shackleton wasn’t really a model of stewardship, but he had to think of his crew before making his orders.

  13. Choose one aspect of Antarctic life (living conditions, nature or climate) to give a detailed insight.

  14. Adelie Penguins • Adelie Penguins are mid-sized • Either 3.9 - 5.8 kg in weight • They eat mainly krill, silverfish & glacial squid • They were discovered by Jules Dumont d'Urvillein 1830, and actually named the penguin after his wife, Adelie. • They can be found at the Antarctic Coastline

  15. This is a picture of the Adelie Penguin

  16. Develop 4 questions that you would ask your audience • How did Ernest Shackleton feel about the loss of his ship, The Endurance? Ernest Shackleton, I believe, felt very upset because that was their home when they went to Antarctica. I also believe that he would have gotten quite tired, rebuilding the igloos for the dogs and swimming up and down to get their belongings.

  17. What happened to the Endurance? It got crushed by ice and 15 minutes later, froze and fell into pieces • When was Ernest Shackleton born? On the 15th of February, 1874 • Where did Ernest Shackleton die? In South Georgia, where he was also buried
