  8. What is the MEL Ebooks Collection? • Part of AccessMichigan • 8,000 titles purchased • 3,500 + Public Domain titles • Funded by Library of Michigan • Permanent part of our growing collection

  9. What subjects are included? • Almost anything! • American History, Anatomy, Philology, Math, Consumer Health, Statistics, Film, Arts and Crafts, Zoology… just to name a few

  10. Can we add records to our catalogs for these titles? • MARC records are available through MLC at $.05 per record • To order MARC records, please call the Michigan Library Consortium at 1-800-530-9019 • Records will be provided from OCLC

What are key features of MEL Ebooks? • Ability to search the full content of all of the books with one search • Ability to search key words in entire book • Ability to include these books in library OPAC • “Read” books online (no special device or reader) • Users create individual ID/PW at the library

  14. Custom Newspapers All of newspapers GALE has access to: N.Y. Times Detroit News International Herald Tribune and more… 120 national and international newspapers Years included varies by newspaper

Change re Free Press • AccessMichigan no longer includes access to Detroit Free Press • Vendor changed to NewsBank • Cost increased over 700% • What options do librarians have if they want to purchase the Free Press themselves ? • Group purchase via MLC • Group purchase via COOP or other • Add to an existing contract with NewsBank

Remote Access for Library Patrons • Some libraries have shared passwords or create access using their own systems • New option coming in late May 2002 • Patron enters driver’s license number or state ID number • Authorized to use all resources except library use only (AncestryPlus right now) • http://mel.org will take users to the “new” MeL • For netLibrary user gets to location for creating individual ID/PW

  19. Database Statistics - Costs • Total cost = approximately $3.6 million • Cost per retrieval = 29 cents • Value if purchased separately = $129 million $125,170 per library (avg)

  21. Database Renewals 2002-2003Basic Goals • Continuity with plan for more extended RFP process for 2003- • Core set of resources • Consider high demand subjects • Consider needs of all types of libraries

  22. Database Renewals-Process • Review usage statistics • Gather input from representative groups including: • Reference librarians • Coops • REMCs • MLA, MAME, and Road Show participants

Database Renewals – OCLC’s First Search • “Panorama” package no longer available • Databases must be purchased separately • Able to subscribe to those databases which make up 85% of the usage in FirstSearch • Remaining databases which make up 15% of the usage would cost an additional $1.7 million • Had to choose………

Database Selection Process for 2003- • Library “feedback meetings” to identify subject needs Apr – June 2002 • Survey to prioritize subject needs • RFP to vendors – Fall 2002 • Review teams evaluate databases • Feb 2003 RFP responses due • Recommendation team meets with LM to review responses • AccessMichigan Advisory committee meets • Announcement re databases – March 30 2003
