  3. Each ‘alter’ has own: • Name • Gender • Age • History • Personality Traits • Sexual Orientation • Race • Postures • Gestures • Speech Patterns

  4. Basic Facts • Often confused with Schizophrenia • 7% of population has undiagnosed DID? • Average 2-4 personalities when diagnosed • 13-15 personalities often develop during treatment

  5. More DID Facts • NFL star Herschel Walker has DID • People often have secondary diagnoses • Patients are often misdiagnosed • Many spend 6-7 years before proper diagnosis • ‘Host personality’ (real person) often unaware of alters

  6. Causes of DID • Severe trauma in early childhood • Typically inflicted before age 9 • Sexual, emotional, or physical abuse • Response to stress, threatening situations, or anxiety

  7. Symptoms • Amnesia • Depersonalization • Depression • Mood Swings • Suicidal Tendencies • Sleep Disorders • Panic Attacks • Phobias • Eating Disorders • Flashbacks • Compulsions & Rituals • Headache • Substance Abuse • Reactions to stimuli or “triggers”
