The Delhi University Library (83 years of its existence) is operating as a System of 35 libraries; It has : A Central Reference Library; An exclusive Library for Science stream; The Ratan Tata Library for economics, sociology and geography; The Library of Arts Faculty caters to the needs of subjects on Arts, Humanities and Social Science; There are libraries on the subjects like Music, Social Work, Education, Law; Few Departmental Libraries having small collection; A separate South Campus Library handles all those subjects which are part of the study programmes in the South Campus; and It has a Undergraduate Library.

User Population Libraries under DULS except that of Undergraduate Library in the South Zone, caters to the needs of teachers of different DU departments and colleges, Post Graduate students, M.Phil, Ph. D and Post Doctoral research scholars. • Total Number of Faculty members in University Departments 668 • Number of Faculty members in the Colleges 4500 • Number of PG Students • a. Colleges 6077 • b. University Departments 11557 • Number of Ph. D. Students 4023 • Number of M.Phil Students 593 • Total * 27418 * It does not include the casual members, college population.

Collection • DULS has about 14.20 lakh volumes: • The Major ones are • Central Reference Library 2.5 lakh volumes • Central Science Library 2.0 lakh volumes • Ratan Tata Library 3.0 lakh volumes • Arts Library 2.5 lakh volumes • Law Libraries 1.5 lakh volumes • South Campus Library 3.0 lakh volumes • Other Library’s collection ranges between 10,000 to 1 lakh volumes. • Majorities of Library have outdated collection. • Reference Collection is completely outdated.

Infrastructure • Building of the Central Reference Library is: • 300 ft. long and 200 ft. deep; • The ground floor has east to west hall; • Has impressive main hall 300’ x 35’; • Two halls each 145’ x 35’; • It has two stack halls 60’ away from the Main Hall; • A fabulous centre hall of 95’ x 30’ connects the stack halls with main hall; • Two courts on which the flower beds are planned; • Height of the building is 38’ without the parapet walls • But completely in a depleted condition

  11. Existing Library Services • All Traditional Library Services are being provided • Documentation and Bibliographic service in select libraries • IT based services are at the minimum level • Photocopying service through commercial vendors • Electronic Journals – mainly INFLIBNET based

ISSUES • DULS is almost 20 years behind compared to the developments in the academic libraries; • Central Library’s building (1958) (depleted condition); • Ratan Tata Library (1949) building’s condition; • Space crunch; • Financial health (only 3 % of the University Budget); • Library rules (drastic change to bring centralized membership system); • Library Collection (print + non-print); • ICT based library services • Many More………………

Challenge • The Delhi University Library System has plans to build the Library of Tomorrow – a model University Research Library of the 21st Century that will not only fill up the gap in terms of collection development and physical ambiance but make information readily available to large segment of users’ community. • DULS has been conceived of as a Hybrid Library System (i.e. a manageable combination of physical and virtual collections and its associated information services) wherein on the one hand, the traditional system of library holdings are maintained and strengthened keeping in view the focus and mandate of the University as a whole and on the other hand, ICT based services are implemented.

This extension will be for following purpose: For creating exclusive Electronic Library with all the State-of-the-Art Electronic Library for IT based computing and information retrieval facility; Creating an exclusive modern infrastructure for developing a Library for Disadvantaged Students and Teachers. Augmentation of Library application software with multiple access system including the facility for Web Based Management of Library Activities Accessibility of Electronic Resources: Subscription of Electronic Journals; Procurement of Electronic Reference Sources; Procurement of Electronic Books. Developing the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPERATION DU-RECON) with standard bibliographical details of 10 lakh unique titles or 14 lakh volumes available with the DULS and making it available on the Intranet and Internet. 20.00 lakhs 75.00 lakhs per annum 200.00 lakhs

  24. Electromagnetic Theft Detection SystemSize of the Hall 30’ x 35’ • Coverage up to 6' above the floor on a Classic compact design which can fit into any location easily. Event logging for recording and displays the number of alarms. Self-contained diagnostics. Panels mounted on a base plate or directly to the floor with 36" and 42"W corridors. • Thin metallic strip that is placed in library materials and turned "on" or "off" to either allow passage or sound an alarm when unauthorized materials go through the detection system. Strips will never lose their effectiveness and strength, even after repeated desensitizing and re-sensitizing. Cannot be shielded and virtually undetectable.

  27. Projected Electronic Library • The Electronic Library will be the centre point for all IT based activities in the DULS. It will have the facility to: • Store, Preserve and Retrieve the Electronic Databases with the help of; • Workstations for users and staff; • CD Server for intranet accessibility; • Backup server for storage of data; • Scanners, Printers, Software for various purpose; • Network tools; • Web operations

  28. Design of the User Workstations • Use of lesser space with more ambiance • Computer workstations with an option to keep the CPU in protected environment; • Such Systems will be placed at different locations within the Central Library;

  29. High-density mobile shelving that enables twice the capacity of fixed shelving within a given space. The shelving units move smoothly on tracks.
