  1. Recent Development in Hamamatsu Photonics <Contents> What is Hamamatsu Photonics ?? Development in Vacuum Devices June 24 2005 at NuFact 2005 Workshop Hamamatsu Photonics Electron Tube Division Yuji Yoshizawa

  2. Where is Hamamatsu Photonics ? Hamamatsu = a name of a city HONDA, YAMAHA and SUZUKI (famous motor cycle companies) are located in the same area. It’s an industrial city. TOKYO Main Island Hamamatsu is located between TOKYO and OSAKA. OSAKA Mt.FUJI Hamamatsu City Population : 600K

  3. Hamamatsu Photonics Solid Sate Division Electron Tube Division Systems Division Established : Sept 29, 1953 Net Sales : (2004) $600 M Employees : 2,500 (As of Sept. 2004) Central Research Lab Laser Group

  4. Central Research Laboratory Human PET with Flat Panel PMT Animal PET Clinical PET center was opened in Aug. 2003. (Employees are taking PET scan right now.) (1% of subjects have early cancer !!)

  5. Development in Vacuum Devices Large Format PMT R8055, R3600MOD, Price Comparison Photocathode Higher Sensitivity at Blue Range Unique Shape Flat Panel PMT Combination with SSD HPD(Hybrid Photo Detector)

  6. Large Format PMT Lineup 20 inch 13 inch PMT is relatively shorter comparing to its diameter. 13 inch 8 inch 10 inch

  7. Dimensional Outline of R8055 (13” PMT) Electrodes and Metal Shield Heating for sealing process damages dynode surface. Metal stem flange can avoid the heating problem. Metal Stem Flange

  8. Modification of 20 inch PMT Just an Idea Not making this 25 inch Glass Sphere 526 mm too long !! Metal Stem Flange 610 mm Present 20 inch PMT Modified 20 inch PMT

  9. 40 New Process 35 30 25 Standard Quantum Efficiency [%] 20 15 10 5 BGO NaI(Tl) 0 300 400 500 600 700 800 200 Wavelength [nm] High QE Photocathode Bialkali Photocathode (at 360 nm)

  10. Present Status and Future Plan for High QE Photocathode We are checking reproducibility of this technique while making 2 inch and 3 inch PMTs. (see Present) Next step is to apply it to other sizes, materials and shapes.

  11. Flat Panel PMT / H8500 (64ch) H8500 (2 inch square) 3 x 3 array Pixel Size : 6 x 6 mm 500 tubes were delivered from 2002 for Medical, Radiation monitor and HEP.

  12. Comparison of Effective Area Ratio H8500 (Flat Panel PMT) R1450 (19 mm dia.) R8520-C12 (1” square) R8900-C12/-M16 (1” square) Effective area ratio (EAR) = [effective area] / [external dimension]

  13. Improvement Plan for H8500 256CH type (H9500) is now available.

  14. Hybrid Photo-detector (HPD) Photocathode (-8kV) Photocathode APD Output Photoelectron Light <Products> R7110U-40 (TO-8 Type) R9503U-04 (Proximity Type) Large Format Type (Development) <Features> Good PHD and CE Good Uniformity Immunity to Magnetic Field 8keV Electron Bombardment X 1200 Avalanche Gain X 50 Combination of EB and avalanche gain

  15. Sketch of 5 inch HPD 5 inch HPD was made as feasibility study for larger size. Glass bulb of 5 inch hemispherical PMT was used. APD Target (3 mm in dia.) Effective Area (80 mm in dia.) sealing tape for protection 180 mm HPD : Hybrid Photo Detector

  16. Next Step of Large Format HPD • 13 inch HPD is being developed with collaboration of the Univ. of Tokyo and JST(JAPAN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY AGENCY). • Working prototype would be made in 2 years (by mar.2007). • Development will be finished by Mar.2010.
