What is Cloud Computing? • “Cloud” is another word for the internet. • A new form of technology that allows business and private users to store their information online. • No hardware necessary! • Pros:Computers are lighter and service is cost effective • Cons: Big transition and too much dependency on the internet

  3. How the cloud is used • Software as a service – SAAS Ex. Microsoft Office 365, and Gmail End users. • Platform as a service – PAAS Custom applications and running Linux/Windows/etc. Application developers. • Infrastructure as a service – IAAS Virtual platform utilized and online storage as a service. Network architects.

Amazon Web Services • Collection of remote services that make up the cloud computing platform • Offered by Amazon.com • Provides large computing capacity which is much faster and cheaper than building a physical location. • Located in 8 regions • Each region has data centers that provide AWS services. • Prevents outages from spreading between zones.

Amazon EC2 • Allows users to rent virtual computers on which to run their own computer applications. • Allows scalable deployment of applications by providing a web service. • A user can boot an Amazon Machine Image to create a virtual machine. • A user can create, launch, and terminate server instances as needed. • By paying by the hour for active servers. • Control over the geographical location of instances • Allows for latency optimization and high levels of redundancy. • In November 2010, Amazon switched to its own retail website to EC2 and AWS

Amazon S3 • An online file storage web service offered by Amazon Web Services • Provides storage through web service interfaces. • First publicly available web service. • March 2006: United States • November 2007: Europe • Uses the same scalable storage infrastructure to run its own global e-commerce network.

Google – Windows Azure • A cloud computing platform and infrastructure • Created for building, deploying and managing applications and services. • Done through a global network of Microsoft-manage data centers. • Provides both PaaS and IaaS services. • Supports many different programming languages, tools and frameworks • Released on February 1, 2010 • Allows developers to build sites using ASP.NET, PHP, orNode.js • Migrate applications and infrastructure without changing existing code.

Case – Office 365 • Wants to better adapt the software to meet the advantage of social, big data and cloud computing. • Wants to make its software suite in the cloud smarter and offer more interactivity to those who use it. • Machine learning application. Code name: Oslo • Designed to learn user usage and understand how users work with Office 365. • Preparing new API for files, contacts, email, calendar and tasks in Office 365. • Connect your documents and presentations to the cloud. • We used the cloud to create this presentation :3 • Makes it easier to get your documents on all your devices • AOL meets Microsoft Office meets the cloud

Timeline (Weather Almanac) • 1997 – “Cloud computing” term is coined by Information Systems Professor RamnathChellappa • 1999 – SAAS offered for first time from Salesforce.com. • 2000 – Dot com bubble bursts. Amazon realizes cloud architecture increases efficiency. • 2002 – Amazon Web Services is launched offering cloud-based services. • 2003 – Blackberry introduces first smart phone with access to internet

Timeline Cont. • 2004 – Google launched their cloud based email (Gmail) • 2008 – Release of iPhone with no buttons (a clue to a virtual future) • 2011 – Apple launched iCloud and cloud applications are becoming credible replacements. • 2013 – PCs replaced by personal clouds where all your content is found. • Forecast for the future – Cloud will be integrated in some way with everything.

  14. In summation, • Cloud services are within our forecast • Wean off of hardware gradually with computers • Businesses sit aloft cloud 9 with such services.
