  2. WHAT HAVE WE DONE TO IMPROVE DENTAL SERVICE PROVISION FROM A HEALTH PROTECTION PERSPECTIVE ? 1. Improvement in instrument cleaning protocols. 2. Guidance on surgery design, layout and separation of clinical from decontamination areas. Effective separation of clean and dirty areas. 3. Review of commissioning, testing and maintenance of cleaning and sterilizing equipment. Instigation of appropriate validation and testing of all machines4. Improvements in the management of instrument procurement procedures and testing and maintenance of equipment. 5. Improved training and records of training on decontamination 6. A review of the provision of on-site decontamination units within the SPS and consideration of outsourcing to central sterilizing departments

NES DECONTAMINATION PROGRAMMEWhat does the programme cover?The programme focuses on key issues vital to ensuring patient safety.  It covers all aspects of the decontamination life cycle, providing essential information and advice on best practice. Modules that are now available in this programme are:Decontamination - An Overview Microbiology Acquiring Medical Devices Protecting Yourself & Others Cleaning & Disinfection Inspection & Packaging Sterilization Waste Management, Transportation of Medical Devices & Storage Ensuring Quality Each module has an e-learning component and a work-based component

  4. MAIN POINTS1. Basic hygiene is the most important Health Protection for staff and patients.2. Pandemic Flu will mean: - urgent/emergency services during the worst parts; and - general slowdown of health and criminal justice services.3. We will cope with other “big, bad” problems much better if we get the simple things right (and manage staff concerns).
