  8. What is Math Olympiads? It is an opportunity for you to engage in creative problem solving activities which develop your ability to reason, to be logical, to be resourceful, and occasionally to be creative! But most importantly…it’s FUN!!! 

  9. The Math Olympiad Goals • Develop enthusiasm for problem solving and mathematics. • Deepen understanding of mathematical concepts and strengthen ability to use these concepts. • Consider concepts that you might not otherwise encounter • Enrich experiences in intellectually stimulating and significant mental activities • And…of course…HAVE FUN!!! 

  10. Math Olympiads Data • Created in 1977 by Dr. George Lenchner, an internationally known Math educator • Nearly 150,000 students from 6,000 teams participated in MO last year • All 50 states were represented • About 30 other countries were represented also

  11. Our Division/Teams • We will participate in MO Division E, which is grades 4 – 6 • We will have 3 official teams • Team Acadia • Team Gowana • Team Koda

  12. Math Olympiads Contests • Wednesday, November 14th • Wednesday, December 12th • Wednesday, January 9th • Wednesday, February 13th • Wednesday, March 13th

  13. Contests (cont.) • Each contest consists of 5 problems • Each problem requires careful mathematical thinking and has a time limit • Each student, working alone, scores 1 point for each correct answer • Calculators are not permitted

Math Olympiads Awards • Individuals • Each participant receives a Certificate of Participation • The highest scorer & second highest scorer of each team receives a trophy • Top 50% ~ embroidered Math Olympiads patch • Top 10% ~ silver or gold Math Olympiads pin • Top 2% of the Top 10% typically receive the gold pin • Perfect Score (25 pts) ~ bronze MO medallion • Could you be the first to win this for Shen? 
