Knowledge and Skills Framework • KSF describes and defines the Knowledge and skills which NHS staff need to apply in their work in order to deliver quality services • KSF is the staff development part of Agenda for Change and it is mandatory for most NHS employees to have a job description and an annual appraisal (joint review) based on this framework • (Department of Health, 2004)

  4. Objectives for Today • Are: • Support AHPs in your locality with their CPD • Support AHPs carry out CPD needs analysis • Assist AHPs meet the HPC CPD standards • Identify the people and tools which can help • Team approach in your organisation • Improve your knowledge and understanding of E-KSF • Gain some practical experience of using E-KSF • Identify opportunities and barriers • Identify the next steps

  5. Knowledge and Skills Framework and Staff Development • Provides a single, consistent, comprehensive and explicit framework on which to: - Support effective learning - Promote equality and diversity - Review and develop all staff - Improve the service delivered to patients (Scottish Government Health Department, 2005)

  6. E-KSF and Staff Development • E-KSF assists NHS staff to track their progress against the KSF and maintain a PDP covering the actions they need to take to keep their skills and knowledge up to date • E-KSF is available to all staff and in-conjunction with a reviewer, post outlines, development reviews, and PDPs can be agreed

  7. Fine Andy, but doesn’t this sound like a “tick the box exercise”.....I’ve got lots to do and this sounds like even more • The aim of today is to show you how this benefits you (healthy scepticism is good) • This has improved the way things (appraisals) are done • Appraisals reduce mortality in patients by 8% (eh? How does that work then????) Professor West’s paper • Accurate training plans • It works, it really does!!!

  8. By the End ofToday • Some experience of using E-KSF • Entered a Personal Development Plan • Work on a joint review document i.e. entering evidence
