  2. Origins • A birthday is a day that comes once a year when a person celebrates the anniversary of his or her birth. • Birthdays are celebrated in numerous cultures. • In some cases it is inherited from ancient traditions as a rite of passage to becoming of age.

  3. Spanish Traditions when celebrating birthdays • It is a tradition to pull the honouree's ear as many times as years he or she celebrates

  4. Spanish Traditions when celebrating birthdays • The honouree usually receives presents as well

  5. Socialization • They are seen as well as an opportunity to socialize with family and friends.

  6. The Cake and the Candles • A very important part of the celebration has to do with the blowing of the candles that previously have been set on a cake.

  7. The Cake and Candles (II) • Before blowing the candles, the honoree has to wish three wishes but he or she must not say them aloud or they won’t come true.
