  3. The Origin of Kwanzaa • Kwanzaa was created by Dr. MaulanaKarenga of United Slaves Organization in 1966. • It was offered at that time as an African American alternative to Christmas. • It is celebrated from December 26 to January 1.

  4. What does Kwanzaa mean? • Kwanzaa is Swahili and means "first fruits." • Swahili is the native language of several countries in east Africa and is learned as a second language by many other people.

  5. The "Seven Principles of Kwanzaa" are: • Unity/ єдність • Self-Determination/ самовизначення • Collective Work and Responsibility/ колективна робота і відповідальність • Cooperative Economics/ спільні економіки • Purpose/ мета • Creativity/ креативність • Faith/ віра

  6. These seven principles emphasize traditional African values.

  7. Kwanzaa decorations include African art, colorful cloth, kinaras, and fresh fruits. Gifts are given mainly to children, but must always include a book and a heritage symbol.

  8. A kinara is a candle stick holder. Seven candles are put in the holder: three red, one black, and three green.

  9. Kwanzaa is a celebration of family, community, and culture. • A Karamu feast is held on December 31. Families and friends get together to eat, listen to music, dance, pour libations and exchange gifts.
