  2. Offer Elements of an Offer Offer Evaluation Negotiation UNT Career Center

  3. Elements of an Offer • A clear “we are offering you the job” statement • Your position, title and definition of duties • Identification of your immediate supervisor • Starting salary • Conditions of employment (probation, training, etc.) • Date and time to report to work UNT Career Center

  4. Offer Evaluation THE JOB • Salary and title • Initial assignment meets immediate expectations • Potential for growth • Quality and quantity of day to day tasks • Job responsibility and decision-making authority • Autonomy and group interface • Work environment/culture • Hours expected to work • Location and cost of living • Travel requirements UNT Career Center

  5. Offer Evaluation OTHER CONSIDERATIONS • Company’s management style • Company rating/ranking and size • Relocation assistance, temporary living expenses, etc • Bonuses/Stock options/Profit sharing • Perks - company car, memberships, etc. UNT Career Center

  6. Questions to Consider What is your current salary? Or What are your salary expectations? UNT Career Center

  7. Negotiation • Know yourself, your worth and your needs • What are your skills, experiences, academic qualifications, accomplishments, etc.? • What is the value of these qualifications to an employer? • What is my cost of living? (Be reasonable) UNT Career Center

  8. Negotiation • Whoever mentions money first loses. • Research current salaries & benefits • Average UNT salaries, average industry salaries, advertised salaries, the NACE Salary Survey, etc. • Other benefits: profit sharing and bonuses UNT Career Center

  9. Negotiation • Employers equate salary to skill level. • If you are underpaid in your current position, the recruiter will undervalue what you are currently doing. • Revealing what your current or previous salary was/is, can be a fatal blow to your negotiation. UNT Career Center

  10. Negotiation • Always use a salary range. • Whether you are stating what you are currently paid, or what you want to be paid. • If pushed for an exact figure in an interview . . . I have noticed that employees in this position typically earn between $28,000 and $38,000. Based on my skills and qualifications, I would hope to earn a salary on the upper end of this range. I am willing to negotiate. UNT Career Center

  11. Negotiation • Discuss your salary expectations • Politely explain your skills and your supports with the employer • Know the employer’s needs and how you fit into their organization • Allow the employer to explain their reasons • Try to make it a “win-win situation” • Know when to walk away and when to accept their offer UNT Career Center

  12. You mustalwaysbe able tojustifyor support your negotiations! UNT Career Center

  13. Negotiation Seven other things to remember: • Determine your lowest salary expectations • Salary is not the only thing negotiable • Be honest • Offers are almost always negotiable • Only negotiate if you really want the job and are ready to accept if they meet your requests • Never reengage after your acceptance • Be confident UNT Career Center

  14. Negotiation • Mistakes to Avoid • Fail to compile supports for negotiating position. • Believe you are indispensable to an employer who will give you substantial raises. • Approach negotiations from a need or want perspective, instead of assigning a value to your qualifications. • Fail to do research, making you unable to deal intelligently with salary questions and issues. • Try to play hard to get when you have little or no leverage. • Mention money first.
