  1. ASSESSMENT GUIDELINESBY HOUSE TYPE There are three types of houses: Pucca Katcha Semi Pucca

  2. PUCCA • Houses with structure in RC Frame with RC sub structure (which means foundation), vertical and horizontal reinforcement, and walls made of block/brick/stone used with cement sand mortar. • If both walls and roof are made of Pucca materials, the house is classified as Pucca. • Pucca wall is made of burnt bricks, stone and cement concrete. • Pucca roof is made of Tiles, Slate, Corrugated Iron, Zinc or other metal sheets, asbestos cement sheets, bricks, lime and stone, stone and RCC and concrete.

  3. KATCHA • Houses made of mud used for walls/roof and/or dry stone masonry, 80% of the Katcha houses have timber frame (columns and beams). Mud roof can be done with wooden panels or wooden beams or CGI Sheets. • If both walls and roof are made of katcha materials, the house is classified as Katcha.

  4. SEMI PUCCA • Houses without RC frame (columns and beams) but with good masonry work with cement mortar and RCC/CGI Roof. • There is no universal agreement of what is the percentage of the material that could define semi pucca. • Example: A house with good brick masonry and RC foundation is considered as semi pucca.

  5. DAMAGE CATEGORY • There are two type of Damages: • Totally Damaged (non-repairable) • Partially Damaged (repairable) The three categories of houses (pucca, katcha and semi-pucca) with similar damages, have different performances when to be repaired or not.

  6. TOTALLY DAMAGED (NON-REPAIRABLE) • Houses that are completely destroyed. • Houses with structural damages. (Please note that there is a big difference between pucca houses and katcha houses. Katcha houses with structural damages cannot be repaired). • Pucca and Semi-pucca houses: when the entire house is damaged from 40% onwards (up to 100%), this is considered totally damaged. See slide no. 09

  7. PARTIALLY DAMAGED • There are two types of Partial Damages; Repairable and Surface damages • Repairable in Pucca house: RC good structure in good condition. Walls can be destroyed or with minor cracks. • Repairable in Semi pucca house: good structure in good condition. Portions of walls can be destroyed (but not corner) • Repairable in Katcha house: minor damages such as small portion of the walls/roof (but never corner cracks). • Surface damages (for the three types of houses): bullets holes in the walls, plasters cracks, broken windows/doors

  9. PUCCA TOTALLY DAMAGEDNon-Repairable House is not repairable because beams and columns are cracked and not straight. Even if part of the structure is standing, the house is not repairable because the frame (column and beams) are damaged. To repair the roof, you have to dismantle the existing structure and construct it again.(Roof is monolithic structure)

TOTALLY DAMAGEDNon-Repairable KATCHA • Roof is collapsed. • The structure cannot be repaired, it must be demolished and newly build • Roof is totally collapsed • Walls cannot be used because they have main cracks (Probably, walls have no foundation). This is not a sound structure to be repaired.

  15. KATCHA TOTALLY DAMAGED Non-Repairable Cracks in corner: structure is not repairable Even with minor cracks in corner, Katcha structure is not repairable Walls are completely detached from wooden frame Wooden frame is not strong and not connected (no diaphragm action)
