URI Winter Session / J Term

Faculty Senate Presentation

Goal

Create a mini-semester over winter session and offer credit-bearing courses and experiences

for students that add value for our students, community and overall learning environment


A Few Examples

♦ Travel courses – international/domestic

♦ Modular courses (gateway initiatives)

♦ Experiential or service learning

♦ Intensive research

♦ High demand labs, clinical courses

♦ Innovative credit-bearing opportunities (in-person or online)

♦ Allow for travel courses (international and domestic)

♦ Intensive experiential and service learning opportunities

♦ Make-up, retake or modular components

♦ Flexible offerings

♦ Innovation of programs and classes

J Term Consultation

♦ Team of Faculty

♦ Enrollment Services & Office of International Education

♦ Benchmarked other colleges and universities

♦ Faculty Senate Executive Committees (2)

♦ Faculty Senate Standards & Calendar Committee

Structure

♦ Winter session will exist on academic calendar, in eCampus, and on students’ transcripts

♦ Dates will be established by Standards and Calendar Committee (begin early January)

♦ Discounted tuition, students not eligible for Federal Financial Aid

♦ Winter Session enrollment committee formed to support faculty, assist with logistics and set enrollment targets

♦ Faculty compensated at academic year overload rate plus international or domestic travel (if appropriate)


Academic Standards & Calendar Committee (ASCC)

♦ “Sound and viable opportunity”

♦ Support students earning up to 4 credits during J Term

♦ Travel courses and experiential learning are the first steps

♦ Issues to address: housing / new course approval (underway)

♦ Need to articulate minimum enrollments for each course

♦ ASCC examined Manual and has recommended revisions
