  2. What Is Public Policy • Public- Involving the majority of a population. • Policy- Governmental regulations. (laws, acts, presidential initiatives) • Public Policy- Governmental Policies that effect the general population.

  3. The stages of Public policy • Socioeconomic Environment • Public Agenda • Policy Selection • Policy Adoption • Policy Implementation

  4. This is the world we live in Can be as small as a neighborhood As large as the nation Wide variety of factors effect it Socioeconomic Environment

  5. Public Agenda • Public agenda is when socioeconomic environment has changed to the point that current policy does not fit the environment anymore • Interest groups and political parties attempt to influence both the public agenda and the socioeconomic environment

  6. Governments desires for policy This can be influenced by public agenda Policy Formation Can start here Government Agenda

  7. This is the step where the government begins to become invovled. Government admits that there is an issue to be addressed. Problem Identification

  8. Problem Definition Policy Options Policy Selection

  9. Policy Options • Once a problem has been identified a course of action must be selected. • Influence is just as important here as at the public opinion stage • Identification of a problem does not mean the solution you want will be adopted.

  10. Policy Adoption • Once a policy has been selected it then is adopted • This is when the policy goes through the “bill-law” stage. • It is not uncommon for the policy selected and the policy adopted to be a bit different.

  11. Policy Implementation • This is the final stage of the public policy process • Bureaucracy is responsible for enforcing policy • Police • Field Agents • Teachers • Just because a policy is adopted does not mean that it will be implemented or enforced.
