Network Implementation Update • New Regional Optical Network now operational • Encountered several delays • Member migration now underway • Collaborating with the NJ Turnpike Authority to access statewide EZ-PASS fiber network • Plans for a 2nd Internet Provider in Philadelphia • Major voice-services bid about to be released • Greater bandwidth permits new applications

New Applications now Possible • Disaster recovery options now possible with excess capacity • Wholesale rates on voice services • Centrally hosted course management systems • Access to national networking initiatives and federally funded research repositories • Well positioned for the future and now have the capacity to support more bandwidth intensive applications such as Video-On-Demand

National State Networking Efforts • Currently serving as Co-chair of StateNets • Lobbying efforts led to the creation of a new category of membership in Internet2 for State and Regional networks • Acknowledges the importance of StateNets in controlling the “last mile” to the R&E community • Will gain 12 governance seats on the Internet2 BoT and various advisory councils

NJ Digital Video Initiative • Growing importance of on-demand video in online education is now widely recognized • VALE, the NJ Digital Highway and Library consortia have identified the need to provide video resources and services statewide as an important strategic initiative • William Paterson (VALE), Rutgers Libraries, and NJEDge are partnering on an IMLS Grant to provide fundingfor such an initiative

NJ Digital Video Repository • The portal repository will support: • “Lectures-on-Demand” with a clickable “table of contents” for K-20 educators • Licensed commercial academic videos from companies such as Films Media Group • Locally owned and developed academic video • Videos searchable through metadata tags • VoDcasting and Podcasting delivery options • Statewide authentication and authorization

Instructional Advantages of VoD • Access to content any time, any place • Easily construct clips to meet instructional needs • Playlists easily integrated with Blackboard/WebCT • More titles can be purchased with digital delivery rights • Online students can access the same content as classroom students • Increased bandwidth and infrastructure is now stable enough to provide quality video-on-demand
