  1. Living Drug Free What are the benefits of living a drug free life? What are some of the things that you can do to resist drug temptation? What are some things you need to know about drugs in our community What are some strategies you can use to help others who may be at risk or drug use?

  2. Big Idea • By deciding not to use drugs, you promote your own health and influence others to do the same. • We will explore some ideas that will help you understand the importance of living a drug free life

  3. Vocabulary • Drug-Free school Zone: • Areas w/in 1,000 to 1,500 ft of schools and designated by signs, w/in which people caught selling drugs receive especially severe penalties. • Drug Watches: • Organized community efforts by neighborhood residents to patrol, monitor, report, and otherwise try to stop drug deals and drug abuse.

  4. Vocabulary • Rehabilitation: • The process of medical and psychological treatment for physiological or psychological dependence on a drug.

  5. Resisting Pressure to Use Drugs • By resisting, you protect your health and become a role model to others. • It takes a strong person to resist drugs and commit to a drug free life • Usually it is the person with weak character who use drugs.

  6. Commit to IT! • Very difficult. • Must consider all the consequences. • Must feel certain. • May have to decide if certain friends are really your friends. • Refusal Skills: • What are some?

  7. Healthy Alternatives • Hobbies • Sports • The Arts • Community Activities • School Organizations

  8. Drug Prevention Efforts • Schools and communities are working together to support the students in their efforts to be drug-free. • How can you help?

  9. School Efforts • Creating Drug-Free School Zones • Fines • Suspension/Expulsion • Jail time • Locker/Backpack searches

  10. Community Efforts • Drug Watches. • Antidrug programs in the community.

  11. Helping Others • What you can do…. • Guide to help others: • Identify sources in community. • Talk to the person when he/she is sober. • Express your feelings and concern. • Describe to person’s behavior w/out being judgmental. • List to the person’s response. • Offer to go with the person to go get help.

  12. Getting Help • Most drug users/addicts need help from friends, family and professionals. • Drug Treatment centers: • Outpatient drug-free treatment. • Short-term treatment. • Maintenance therapy. • Therapeutic communities. • The biggest key is admitting the problem!
