About Us In 1915, when the first Jordano Brother’s Market opened in Santa Barbara, a rich tradition of integrity, quality, and service was born. Four sons of an Italian rancher joined forces to open a grocery store on State Street in Santa Barbara. Their hard work and determination paid off. That single store grew into Santa Barbara’s first chain of modern supermarkets.
CHANGING THE FOCUS TO DISTRIBUTION By the 1960’s, there were 18 Jordano’s Supermarkets up and down the Central California Coast. But the growing dominance of national supermarket chains forced the company to adapt to changing times. In 1975, with CEO Peter Jordano at the helm, Jordano’s sold its supermarkets to focus on a wholesale food and beverage operation. It was a difficult decision, but a smart move. In the 1970s, Jordano’s went through a dramatic transformation. Seeing the growth of large national grocery store chains, Peter Jordano realized his family's business would have to adjust to changing times. Deciding to focus on distribution, Jordano’s sold their grocery stores after more than 60 years in business. It was a difficult transition, but the company soon began a new period of growth.
