  1. National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP) Blackburn College were successful in securing two bids in January 2018

Young Chef Competition The concept of the project was to inspire young people who have an interest in cooking to engage with a competition and enable to have greater links Chefs with schools to raise aspirations for young people. Year 8 and 9 pupils from across Lancashire were given the opportunity to apply for the competition which was promoted through Blackburn College’s Industry Links and School Partnership Team, Future U Outreach Officer and Kay Vaughan (Enterprise Co-ordinator from Inspira) The project is in conjunction with the Reg Johnson Foundation, Lancashire’s legendary poultry farmer, who developed Goosnargh duck and chicken which is a well known and favouriteingredient in many of the country’s top kitchens. The programme and competition is heavily supported by TV chefs Nigel Haworth and Paul Heathcote MBE

  3. 31 pupils (19 teams) were successful in going through to the heats which were held on Monday 16thand Tuesday 17th April at Blackburn College. 12 pupils (7 teams) made it through to the final which will be held on Tuesday 1st May at Blackburn College (Blackburn Central High School (BCHS), Bowland High, St Christophers, Haslingden High, Pleckgate High) The winning team’s dish will form part of the food offer at the Festival of Making being held in Blackburn on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th May as well as a cookery school prize at the Michelin Star Hotel Northcote Manor. Continual Professional Development (CPD) opportunities will be offered to the teachers of the schools who get through to the heats based on the seasons over a 12 month period The winning school will also win a piece of equipment for the school (provided by one of the sponsors) This is envisaged to be an annual event and grown in terms of other institutions involvement and wider school scope

  4. Blackburn’s Got Wheels • The project will provide an opportunity to develop a programme, to actively promote the development and engagement of STEM activities across both higher education and further education encouraging young people to consider a future within STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects. • A peer led engineering project involving 2nd year HE students on the BEng degree programme at University Centre at Blackburn College (UCBC) and supported by Richard Taffs STEM Ambassador from NIS Engineering

So far…… The HE students have project managed the construction of an EV racing Kit Kart working with Year 12 and 13 NCOP students at Blackburn College Learning outcomes from the project were presented by the FE students to Year 9 pupils as part of ‘show and tell’ sessions The first STEM Inspiration Day took place on Thursday 19th April with 4 schools and 40 students participating Verbal feedback from one of the schools was excellent and confirmed they would like to be more involved in future developments and opportunities

Further Opportunities/Possibilities • A ‘Race Day’ at the Three Sisters Racing Circiuitin Wigan is planned to take place in May with video and photographic coverage • The students now have an opportunity to enter the evGrandPrix finals at the Indi 500 racetrack in America. (depending on sponsors and funds available) A video diary, presented/edited in a “Youtuber” style will be carried out on this trip to showcase as assemblies and promote across the education landscape • Collaborating with The Blair Project https://www.theblairproject.org/evgrandprix/to work in partnership with Bolton University and Greater Manchester Higher with technical support from Purdue University • Possibility of Guy Martin supporting the project as a celebrity guest and ambassador

Next Steps/Ambitions The aim is to enhance the learning with FE students and focus on making improvements and tuning the karts involving the young people taking part in the project looking at physics, maths ratios, 3D computer modelling, computer tuning and how to problem solve To work with Year 9 pupils on the actual project, tuning and building of the karts going forward (to be determined : part of school time of after school) Scope out across College with more Year 12 and 13 students, specifically from Business/Finance & Digital Media/Photography/Film who will be able to engage with the motorsport theme from their respective area of specialism. Possibility of incorporating The Prometheus Project would also ; this is a cutting edge energy recuperation project being managed at the RATH @ Blackburn College. This would allow more exploration of the Energy & Environment LEP priority sector. Explore the possibility of a competitive self-build vehicle seeking corporate sponsorship during Phase 2.

  8. Our aim in future is to further collaborate with our partner institutions and stakeholders as part of the consortium as these projects become established and well known across the educational landscape
