  1. A PBL Unit for Second Grade:Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat

  2. Introduction: • Children with parents in the military often move every couple of years. Moving can be a difficult time for these kids, filled with mixed feelings. When they move to a new state, they may have little knowledge about their new home. • You are part of an organization for kids, by kids. You help to run an Army Youth Services program called Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat.

  3. Task: Your program helps military kids ages 7-12 to feel good about moving and teaches them about the states they move to. To be a project manager at Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat, you must be outstanding in two job-related skills: Persuading through Writing and Clearly Communicating Information

  4. Process: To keep your position as project manager, you must complete one persuasive assignment andone communication assignment.   5. Persuasive Assignment 1: • Read Alexander, Who's Not (Do You Hear Me? I Meant It!) Going to Move • Create a list of pros and cons for moving using Word. • Design a flyer to persuade military kids that moving isn’t all that bad. Be sure to bullet at least three pros to moving. Next Assignment

Persuasive Assignment 2: • Interview an Army Youth Services representative via e-mail to find out how you can persuade children to participate in a program. • Use Word to create a newspaper advertisement that persuades children to visit your office and use Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat services. Be sure to give potential clients at least three reasons to use your services. • Next Assignment

  7. Persuasive Assignment 3: • Write a survey to e-mail to military students. Ask them questions about moving. Tell them about what Home Is Where You Hang Your Hat does and ask for their opinions. • Look at your survey results. Think about: How does your program help military kids? • Army Youth Services’ funding may be cut. This means you won’t have enough money to keep the program running. Write a letter to the Army Post Commander persuading him not to cut the funding. Be sure to give three reasons why your program is important for kids. Back

Use the World Book for Kids Online Database to locate important information. • Create a PowerPoint presentation designed to inform military students about your state. Follow the directions on the template to include all the necessary information. Next Assignment

  10. Communication Assignment 3: • Your program director has assigned you a state to research. Use the World Book for Kids Online Database to locate important information. • Design a poster for a military kid to hang in his/her bedroom that provides facts about the new state. • Include a paragraph that has a hook and three important facts about the state. • Represent an additional four facts about the state using hand drawn pictures, clipart, or maps.
