  2. Meccaمكة المكرمة • Located in Saudi Arabia • The prophet Muhammad proclaimed Islam in Mecca, which had previously been a large trading center. • Today, Mecca is the capital of Saudi Arabia.

  3. Muslim Pilgrimage • Each year, 13 million Muslims travel to Mecca to perform the Hajj pilgrimage. (Nearly, 8 times the population of the city.) • From Medina, the entrance in to Mecca is reserved for Muslims only and non-muslims are not permitted to use it.

  4. Makkah! Bakkah! Muslims partake in prayer five times a day in which all face the Kaaba in Mecca, in order to form unity between members. This prayer is known as the qibla • Kaaba is known as the “House of God” build by Abraham and his son Ishmael

  5. Famous Landmarks • Masjid al- Haram – the largest mosque in the world. • The Qishla of Mecca- an Ottoman castle. • Zamzam well- a spring well said to contain God’s water and heals those who drink from it.
