  7. MS Word - Intermediate Users As you may, or may not know, MS Word isn’t only for typing and word processing. The features that make Word the most used program in the world only begin there. In this tutorial, we’ll take you through some of the most widely used features of MS Word. By the end of our time together you’ll be able to use the information found here to create documents that are rich in content, but also organized well and functional for a variety of purposes Diagram 1 SPS Technology Department

  12. MS Word-Intermediate Users Diagram 2 The most common thing we want to do is add graphics. Putting in pictures or borders to make a presentation look a little better keeps the interest of your reader, or focuses it where you’d like them to be. 13. MS Word-Intermediate Users As you can see, Garfield is the focus of our document at this point. We’ll be moving him in a bit. once we start talking about some of the things …that will happen when we want to put in text. Right now though, we want to ask ourselves why we want Garfield where he is. Remember, you can put him wherever you think he’ll make the greatest impact on your reader. Of course you can tweak his properties and make sure of things like size, layout, and colors, with a simple right click. Diagram 4 SPS Technology Department

  14. MS Word-Intermediate Users By right clicking on Garfield and then clicking on “Format Picture” in the drop down menu that appears, we’ll see a box that looks like this. From here we can adjust the picture with regard to its size, position, how text will “wrap” around it (there are a number of styles depending on how you want Garfield to look), and even add an “alt tag” (those nifty little pop ups that tell you what a picture is) for folks with disabilities using text readers. 15. MS Word-Intermediate Users One of the things we can do to make sure we don’t have any conflicts with how Garfield ultimately ends up positioned on our page (without the right clicking and use of “text wrapping”) is to create a table. Then we can stick him into one of the cells (one of the boxes in the table). Text wrapping Table and cell merge SPS Technology Department

  16. MS Word-Intermediate Users Another really useful tool in Word is the “Bullets and Numbering” function under the “Format” tab on your toolbar. • Foods for a cat: • Fish • Pizza • Chocolate The link at your left was created by using Word Art and inserting the hyperlink into it. Go to the next page and see how it was done. Springfield Public School's Webpage SPS Technology Department

  17. MS Word-Intermediate Users Go to Insert Click on Picture Click on “Word Art” Choose style Enter text Save Word Art is really cool when you want to emphasize a title, logo, quote, or just about any other piece of text. Go to the next slide to insert a hyperlink into word art. SPS Technology Department

  18. MS Word-Intermediate Users • The wonderful thing about using Word is that many of the tasks you complete with it are transferable to other Microsoft programs. We can also use it to create links to other documents, projects, or the internet. A good example is the word art we created in the last slide. All you have to do to insert a hyperlink is: • click on the word art (or any other point in the document), • click insert on the tool bar, • click hyperlink, • put the address of the page you wish to link to in the appropriate menu box on the pop up screen and hit “o.k.”. • It’s that simple.
