  2. Exegetical Step 5- Grammatical Analysis • Purpose: to “chart” the passage in an effort to aid the exegete in outlining and noticing textual patterns • Various “Charting” methods • Sentence diagram (Logos) • Arcing- www.biblearc.com • Paragraph Charting (Word/ Jude1)

  3. The Value of Paragraph Charting • It is fast • It allows the entire paragraph to be seen on only a few pages • It enables one to see important repetitions

  4. Exegetical Step 5- Grammatical Analysis • Make a grammatical “chart” of your passage • Simply draw three lines on a sheet of paper • Note especially the main, sub-clauses, and prepositional phrases • Analyze the syntax of the passage

  5. Exegetical Step 6- Provisional Outline • Purpose: to analyze the structure and draw insights from that structure • Steps (slightly different from Guthrie) • 1. Look at the “Chart” carefully • 2. Look for repeated words, phrases, grammatical devices, etc. • 3. Make a provisional outline of the passage

  6. 1. Look at the Chart • Notice the main verbs • Notice the prepositional phrases • Notice the connecting devices

  7. 2. Look for stylistic devices • Repeated words or phrases • Transition devices • Parallelism • Figures of speech

  8. Make a provisional outline • This is not a sermon outline • This should reflect the overall text, not just one element • This should make use of the chart and stylistic devices if possible • This should give you an overview of the passage
