  3. How did we get to this point? • Institutional support – Directorate and Senate • Funding from CELT • NUS/HEA Case study in student engagement • Building on best practice • CBS student assistants’ scheme • NW Missouri State • Pittsburgh research

Partnership reality • Student focus - aligning activities of both parties • 50% secondment of senior member of SU to CELT • Learning Community activities: • Student representation joint working group • Student employment opportunities • Pre-arrival and FE • Student Academic Partners www.birminghamcitysu.com/saps

Student Academic Partners • Joint student/staff proposals invited (Sept 10) • University wide scrutiny through an assessment panel (Oct 10) • Projects awarded (Nov 10) • Induction briefing for all students and staff • Equality of role • Students paid £10 per hour for up to 125 hours work • Employed through Students’ Union • Generation of project plan • Market place activities

Partnerships with FE • University debate on engagement with FE • Find out what Colleges wanted from working with a University • Student engagement became the key and partnership with SU was the answer! • SU and pre-arrival thoughts • Series of meetings with Colleges to identify collaborative projects

  7. Outcomes of FE project • Student academic representation training • Student led activity – clubs, societies and volunteering organised by students • Collaborative discussions around international students • Virtual Students’ Union
