Types of Scholarships • School Sponsored: • JH Awards– Due in May • Partner 36 (School District)– Due in April • Leadership, academics, some others • District Authority Awards (Provincial Ministry of Ed)– Due in May • ADST, Fine Arts, PHE, Languages, Tech & Trades, Community Service, & Indigenous Culture • Some external awards (Loran, Schuler, Lester Pearson, etc.) • External– various deadlines • Many! • Find and apply on your own • Some are school sponsored • Post-Secondary Entrance Scholarships– look up deadlines • Some automatically entered

  3. Selection Criteria DEADLINES ARE FIRM! • Most of time: • Academic achievement • Community service • Extra-curricular • Written statement • References • Sometimes: • Aboriginal ancestry • Financial need • Overcoming hardship • Education/ career path specific • Other

  4. Asking for References • Choose carefully • Those who know you well build connections! • Those who will speak well of you • Those who have examples of to speak of • Provide lots of time! (3 weeks) • Make it easy • Provide scholarship criteria • Stamped & addressed mailing envelopes • Give instructions on how to send • Ask in person • If via email– make it professional!

Pearson– By school nomination, Nov. 14 (International students only)

Open Scholarships: Loran • School sponsorship– October 10, 3pm • Direct pool application– October 24 • Eligibility • 85% average or higher • Canadian Citizen • See previous winners • School Sponsorship • Entire application printed and handed in to Ms Hayler by deadline– no expectations! • Workshop support (optional): October 2, after school, Career Centre • Come with application responses prepared for editing • Sign-up in Career Centre
