  1. Water 9A relate the structures of water to its function [as the universal solvent];

  2. We use water for cleaning. Living things need water and are made of about 85 % water. . Fish need water to survive. Water freezes at 0ᵒC and becomes a solid. Water boils at 100ᵒC and becomes a gas. Water condenses in the air to make clouds, then falls as rain. Water runs back to the ocean and starts the cycle again. We use water to wash our dogs. Water is used to put out fires. Water is a liquid at room temperature because it is polar. Water is called the universal solvent because it is polar. Water The Universal Solvent

  3. Likes Dissolve Likes • Polar compounds dissolve in polar solutions • Non-polar compounds dissolve in Non-polar solutions. • Oil is non-polar and water is polar. • Oils do not dissolve in water. • Most covalent compounds are non-polar. • Most ionic compounds are polar.

  4. Water is Polar • Water is called the universal solvent because it is a polar molecule. • Part of the molecule has a + charge and part of the molecule has a – charge.

  5. How things dissolve? • The positive end of water is attracted to the negative ion and the negative end of water is attracted to the positive ion.

  6. Water is important to living things • About 85% of our bodies are water. • Water carries water & nutrients to all the cells in our body. • Water also carries wastes away from cells.

  7. Water is an unusual substance • When water freezes it becomes less dense. • Most things become more dense as they get colder. • This property is important for fish.

  8. Solubility of Solids and Gases • Solids become more soluble as water is heated. • Sugar dissolves in hot coffee faster than in cold tea. • Gases become more soluble as water is cooled. • More oxygen will dissolve in cold water than in warm water. • A cold soda will hold its carbonation better than a warm one.

  9. 1. What characteristic of water remains the same no matter what is dissolved in it? • The ratio of hydrogen to oxygen • The ability to refract light • The hydroxide ion concentration • The freezing temperature

  10. 2. Which factor makes water an effective solvent? • The presence of molecular oxygen • Its lack of covalent bonds • The polar nature of its molecules • Its abundance on Earth’s surface [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]

  11. 3. Which characteristic of water molecules makes water a good solvent? • Mass • Polarity • Potential energy • Chemical energy [Default] [MC Any] [MC All]
