  2. Remember when … • What might a person like or dislike about their first real job? • Despite our view of work as drudgery we want to see how God views work …  It is part of God's plan !  It is meant to be a gift, a blessing, not a curse.

  3. Listen for the tasks that God gave to Adam. Genesis 1:28 (NIV) God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."

  4. Creation and Vocation • What tasks do you see listed for Adam? • What blessings of God do you identify in this verse? • What is the relationship between God’s blessing and our work? • Note that this description of tasks for humans was given before the fall. Why is that significant?

  5. Listen for a description of the garden. Genesis 2:8-9 (NIV) Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. [9] And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground--trees that were pleasing to the eye and

  6. Listen for a description of the garden. good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. … [15] The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it

  7. Vocation and Responsibility • What did God put in in Eden? • What picture comes to mind when you hear the word “garden” in these verses? • Note the phrase “pleasing to the eye.” What does that imply about human beings? • For what purpose did God put man in the Garden of Eden?

  8. Vocation and Responsibility • What do these verses say about why work is a good thing? • So why is work often seen as drudgery? • How could work dishonor God?

  9. Vocation and Responsibility • What is the difference between busyness and diligence on the job? • What can a believer do to have more of an attitude of diligence, even when the task may be menial? • Not working hard enough (the sluggard) can be negative, but working too hard can also be negative. How do we find a godly balance in our work?

  10. Listen for the role of personal choice in Adam and Eve’s actions. Genesis 2:16-17 (NIV) And the Lord God commanded the man, "You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; [17] but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will surely die."

  11. Responsibility and Freedom • What freedoms did God give Adam and Eve? • How are God’s restrictions actually indications of His blessings? • Why do you think are we attracted to do what God has forbidden?

  12. Responsibility and Freedom • What choices in your work will lead to blessing or curse? • How can believers protect themselves from Satan’s deception and confusion?

  13. Application • As human beings, we have a unique relationship with God • He blesses us and communicates directly with us • We are called to serve as God’s agents in exercising responsible care for the creation • As you view the beauty around you this week, honor the Lord as Creator.

  14. Application • The Lord God has ably and abundantly provided for us that we might live • God’s provisions are accompanied by responsibility for their care and use. • Work is good … it is a God-given assignment • Partner with God in your work and serve Him faithfully

  15. Application • The freedom to enjoy God’s blessings is accompanied by the responsibility to obey His word. • Disobedience alienates us from God • Seek God’s strength to do your job as a blessing … to God and to others around you
