School Partnerships to Get Kids Outside Hope Matthews City of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation & Tourism
Nature-related benefits • Increased attention span • Decreased obesity and hypertension rates • Increased conservation and awareness of resources • Lots of really cool learning opportunities • And children are missing out on some really great experiences…
Rock Hill PRT School Programs • Late 1990’s—Literature based programs, Mother Goose • 2000-2003—Clean & Green’s Recycle Clown and Tree Commission’s Gabby Greenleaves
Rock Hill PRT School Programs • 2004—Standards based programming, more science programming • Kayak field trips and climbing wall field trips introduced • Leopold Education Project
It’s not just kayaking • Force and Motion curriculum standards • Physical Education standards • Provide an opportunity for students who would otherwise have it • Overcoming fears and developing life skills • Cross-marketing opportunity for your other programs
Rock Hill PRT School Programs • 2010-2011—continued alignment to South Carolina Curriculum Standards • Grade-level packages • Market different parks to different grade levels
Sample Programs • Glencairn Garden, Second Grade • What’s Bugging You? • Mapping in Glencairn Garden • Classification and Food Chains • River Park, Third Grade • Soil Science • Habitat Hike • Bird Adaptations
So you don’t have a river? • What are your assets and resources? • What is your department’s mission or vision? Share…
SC Curriculum Standards • There’s no getting around them • Rock Hill PRT Field Trip survey results • In case you are not familiar with SC Curriculum Standards, they can be found on the South Carolina Dept of Education website: https://ed.sc.gov/agency/se/instructional-practices-and-evaluations/ • Many elementary teachers are not comfortable teaching science
Standards Awesome Programs! Resources Resources + Curriculum Standards It doesn’t hurt to have really fantastic staff (and volunteers)!
Brainstorm… Does technology have a role in your program? Don’t forget about ELA, Math, & Social Studies standards! It also helps if experiences are hands-on and interactive in addition to being science-based.
You are not alone • Contact your local school district—science support staff? Motivated teachers? • Local higher education institutions—interns, student teachers, professors willing to help • Retired teachers and other volunteers • Project WET, Project Learning Tree, Project WILD
Next steps for Rock Hill PRT • Bicycle safety program piloted in 2013; currently looking at implementation logistics
Next steps for Rock Hill PRT • Teacher professional development • Challenge-Based Learning; integrating technology in to our field trips • Add new programs at new facilities; branch out to middle school
