RPTM 300Y – Tourism & Leisure Behavior-- The study of factors and interactions of leisure and tourism Environment Leisure Week 8 & 16 Week 1 & 9 Travel Culture Week 2 & 10 Week 7 & 15 Tourists Government Week 6 & 14 Hosts Week 3 & 11 Economic Factors Community Week 5 & 13 Week 4 & 12 During this semester we will study the various factors that affect how we experience the impact of tourism and leisure. We will see how these factors can work in harmony and how they can create conflicts. We’ll look first at PA and then the United States. The second half of the semester we’ll compare/contrast as we examine international tourism and leisure.

  2. RPTM 300Y COURSE DESCRIPTIONAs the second largest industry in the United States, tourism exerts a significant influence on our lives. Not only is it an area where the United States consistently experiences a positive trade balance, but the United Nations has identified tourism as a major contributor to economic development worldwide, with important opportunities for developing nations. During this semester we will examine the impact of recreational, socio-cultural, governmental, economic, and physical environment phenomena on the leisure traveler within the tourism industry. Building on your knowledge from your foundations courses, we will first examine these categories individually and then from a holistic perspective both as it relates to tourism in the United States and internationally. The course will help guide you towards and understanding about why a knowledge of tourism and leisure behaviors is important for determining a tourism strategy that is responsible and sustainable.COURSE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this course you will be able to:1. Describe how the three types of travelers impact tourism practices from a historical perspective as well as on current tourism strategies.2. Explain the concept of sustainable tourism and develop a point of view that you are able to factually support.3. Clearly articulate a minimum of two positive and two negative impacts caused by tourism on: - Recreational facilities - Indigenous people - Community (local, state, country) – both guests as well as the host community - Environment4. Explain the role that local, state, and Federal governments play in setting and administering tourism policy.5. Demonstrate the ability to conduct a high-level tourism assessment including recommendations for a community/county within Pennsylvania.6. Propose a tourism development plan that incorporates the United Nations Millennium Goals to create/enhance a sustainable tourism effort in a developing country.
