The Cold Facts of the Ice Business • 400 – 700 Ice Workers Employed 6am- 4pm 7 Days/Week, December to February • Men, Horses, Ice Planers & Hand Saws • Conveyor Belts Carried Ice from Lake • Railroad Spur Enabled Loading of Large Blocks for Delivery to New Haven, Bridgeport, NYC and Beyond www.babbsrink.org

  9. Babb’s History • 1890’s- Babb Family Opens Picnic Area, Beach and Boat Rental • Dance Hall Constructed Circa 1930 • Converted to Roller Rink in Late 1940’s • 1977 – Babb Family Donates 7 Acre Property to Town of Suffield www.babbsrink.org www.babbsrink.org

  12. Who is C.R.C.? • Citizens Restoring Congamond is Duly Recognized, Volunteer Organization Dedicated to the Preservation and Protection of the Congamond Lakes • Loosely Organized Early 1970’s • 1977: Incorporated as a Non Profit 501(c)(3) www.babbsrink.org www.babbsrink.org

How & Why CRC is Involved in the Babb’s Restoration • Summer 2003 - Suffield Approaches CRC for Rink Restoration • “Minor” Changes / Upgrades Required • October 31, 2003: CRC Signs 20 Year Lease With Town • CRC to Renovate Rink and Use Revenues for Lake Maintenance www.babbsrink.org www.babbsrink.org

Major Accomplishments So Far • Over 6,000 Volunteer Hours Invested: • Removal of Interior Seats & Other Materials • Complete Demolition of Rotted Walls & Roof • Concrete Floor Cut Out for New Plumbing • New Framing for Perimeter Area in Process • New 50 Year Roof Installed Over Rink Area • 2006 Babb’s Listed on the National Register of Historic Places www.babbsrink.org www.babbsrink.org

Financial Position Phase I - Get Rink Functional – $927,000 Babb’s Project has Raised $69,000 to Date • Spent Approx. $44,000 • Currently Have ~$25,000 State of Ct STEAP $100,000 Grant Administered by Town of Suffield • Babb’s Project Required to Raise / Spend $52,000 in Matching Funds • Spent Approx. $100,000 Phase I & II - Total Cost – Approx. $1.9M www.babbsrink.org
