  1. “The book thief” by Marcus Zusak. Analyse how links between the beginning and end help you understand a main theme and/or character.

  2. The three main links between the beginning and end are; -Alienation how Liesel is alone both ends of the novel = death of loved ones. -We are our stories how Liesel only had/has the company of books. 1. the grave diggers handbook. 2. book thief – the thought of her books. -Rebuilding How language allows us to rebuild our life, How Liesel is reborn by the books she reads.

  3. Alienated • Liesel is alienated both ends of the novel. • By the death of her brother, her mother sent her to Himmel street. • Death of everyone she loved on Himmel street by the bomb. • Liesel loses everyone she loves by death and also max and her mother leaving and sending her to himmel street she is alienated by not knowing anyone and the death of her brother .

  4. Quotes for alienation • “the book thief...-could see without question that her younger brother... Was now sideways and dead” • Showing the death of her brother, when she first found him dead and the alienation started. • “they’d been expecting a girl and a boy...” • Showing how even Liesel’s first day on Himmel street she was alone and alienated • “the book, the words, her fingers were bleeding, just like they had on her arrival” • -how she is alienated and hurt physically and mentally both ends with a book for company.

  5. We are our stories • When Liesel’s brother died she found company in the gravediggers hand book. • -at the end her love literature is all she has left. • -later on – epilogue – when she leaves for once, she is reunited with the book she wrote, ‘the book thief’. • - other way round, usually people leave her and she usually steals the books. • -the grave diggers hand book (part 1)is black and the book she writes her book in is black also(part 10).

  6. Quotes for we are our stories “there was something black and rectangular lodged in the snow. Only the girl s saw it.” Where Liesel found her first book, after her brother died. “The end, the words, her fingers were bleeding, just like they had on her arrival.” -shows how her story has come to an end, how she has no words to say about what has happened, shows the beginning and end of her story “the book thief.

  7. Rebuilding • -how we can recreate our selves through language. • -Liesel shows this when she is alienated by the death of her brother and Himmel street • Language helps her get over her grief and rebuild her life. • -when her brother died she read a book on burying people, and when Himmel street was bombed she had just finished a book about her struggle and was just about to start a new one.

  8. Quotes for rebuilding “the beginning of an illustrious career” Shows Liesel starting to rebuild her life, by stealing books. Her first book, ‘the grave diggers hand book’. “the book thief wept till she was gently taken away” All her rebuilding was washed away by everyone's death, like the beginning she was taken away from her unmoving loved ones.
