  3. Today you will be reminded that predicting can improve your understanding of an expository text and make the text easier and more fun to read.

  4. Team Cooperation Goal Everyone Participate.

  5. Building Background • In the first part of the DVD, Predicto predicted what the brochure about the USS Constellation Museum and the Maryland Science Center would be about. Who remembers what he predicted about the constellation brochure? • Who remembers what he predicted about the Maryland science Center? • Why do you think Predicto’s predictions were so off-track? • Right, if Predicto had used the clues, his predictions might have been more logical. Who do you think using clues helps you predict?

  6. Building Background • Making Predicto’s last challenge, we predicted the main ideas of the information on the Birth of Aviation exhibit. Who can tell us aboaut some prior knowledge he or she had about the Wright brothers or aviation? • Do you think using your prior knowledge helped you to understand the information on the aviation exhibit? • I think so too. Thinking about what you already know about a topic can make it easier to read and understand new information about it.

  7. Building Background • Today you’re going to predict what part 2 of the Maryland Science Center brochure will be about. It’s on page 18 of your Student’s Viewing Guide. You’ll have a chance to compare your predictions to the ones Adam, Elinor, Amy, and Daniel make. The exhibit is called Your Body: The Inside Story. Do you think you have some background knowledge you can use to make your predictions? I’ll bet you do.

  8. Team Talk Let’s preview the questions. • Daniel said that it was hard to predict what Your Body: The Inside Story was about because there weren’t many clues. What clues did he use to come up with the predictions that it’s about how to stay healthy. • How did you use your background knowledge to predict what Your Body: The Inside Story was about? • Based on what you read in both brochures, would you have voted to go to the USS Constellation Museum or the Maryland Science Center? What did you learn that made you choose this destination? Is this the place you would have chosen before reading the brochures? Why or why not?

  9. DVD Viewing • Show part 6 of the DVD: “ Predict the Inside Story of Your Body” • (6 ½ minutes)

  10. Team Discussion-35 Minutes • Discuss answers to team talk questions • Write answers to question 1 – 3 • View DVD if Necessary.

  11. Class Discussion • Review the questions and the team discussions? • View DVD if there is some doubt.

  12. Daniel said that making predictions helped him read and understand the brochures. He and his friends found out they could learn so much about history at the USS Constellation Museum and so much about science at the Maryland Science Center that they convinced their teacher to let them visit both places. Good thinking! I think predicting has really helped us too. You’ve done a great job of using the clues and what you already know about a topic to make predictions. It’s been fun finding out if your predictions come true. Even Predicto got a clue. Maybe he won’t have to look for a new job after all!

  13. Predicto’s Challenge • Predictohas one last Challenge for us. It’s on Page 11 of your Student’s Viewing Guide. Let’s find out how much he’s learned about predicting!.

  14. Greetings, Ladies and gentlemen, Now that I know how to use clues, my powers of prediction have expanded so much that my turban no longer fits on my head. I’d like to test my powers out on you. • With your partners, take turns reading parts 1, 2, and 3. • Find the main ideas. • Compare the main ideas to my predictions. • Write down which of my predictions came true, which didn’t, and why. With fingers crossed, The Incredible Predicto.
