  1. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • LIU-SPS beam loss review • Magnets and power converters • for beam scraping in LSS6 • J. Bauche, G. Le Godec, 22nd January 2013.

  2. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • Part 1: MAGNETS • J. Bauche

  3. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets LIU-SPS bumper specification parameters (UPDATE January 2013)

  4. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • SPS vertical bumpers situation Strategy: manufacture 6 new bumpers for LIU and for spare consolidation  Compatible MPLV / MPSV

  5. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • Integration on SSS girders SSS 615 MPSV + VC = 860 mm SSS 421 MPLV + VC = 920 mm

  6. Integration in half-cell 619 with TT60 • Before LIU-SPS 61955 • After LIU-SPS

  7. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets Preliminary mechanical design MPV New MPLV TT60 VC @ 61955

  8. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets Preliminary magnetic design MPLV MPV New 1.35 T • 2D 1.33 T 1.75 T 1.62 T 1 T 1 T • 3D

  9. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • Summary • None of the existing SPS bumper fulfills the new specifications for the LIU-SPS scraping scheme • Spare situation of SPS vertical bumpers is not ideal • Strategy: design new magnets compatible as spares for all SPS vertical bumpers • fulfill the needs for the LSS6 scraping scheme • secure the spare situation for the long term • Preliminary study shows realistic magnet design seems achievable • Design must now be optimized (field quality, saturation) and parameters matched to other interfaces, in particular power converters

  10. HIE-ISOLDE beam transfer lines magnets • Part 2: POWER CONVERTERS • G. Le Godec (slides presented by J. Bauche).

  11. Converter Technical proposal • Studies were made for two scenarios: Ref_1 and Ref_2, • Bipolar converters are requested (4 quadrant operation), • Ref_1 is the worst case (RMS value), 11

  12. Converter Technical proposal Converter initial proposal, based on original MPLV design • Modular approach and re-use of existing “bricks”: • S250 family • S500_s = +-240V/+-250A = 2xS250 in a serial configuration, • S250 used for LINAC3/LEIR/TT2/HiRadMat, • AuxPS family • Type I = +-450V/+-450A, • Family used in the PS complex and for the LINAC4/PS-LIU/ELENA/TE-MSC test benches in the future. • The technical proposal could be refined at a later stage, based on the final parameters of the new magnets: the modular approach provides some flexibility… 12
