  1. A WORLD IN MOTION MOVEMENT

  2. MOVEMENT • Think about how you got to school today? • Did you walk or drive? • Bike or skateboard However you travelled, this movement took you from one place to another. Movement connects places at different locations. • Movement refers to the flow of people, products, information, and elements of nature.

  3. MOVEMENT IN TWO WAYS • Geographers look at movement in two ways. They see systems that is, a pattern of routes that connect places together. • People build a networks of highways to carry people to and from work. Nature develops river systems to carry water to the ocean Flow measures the volume of people, products, information, and other things that move along a system • planners measure traffic flow to decide where more lanes are needed on roads and highways

  4. TRAFFIC FLOW AND MOVEMENT

  5. MOVING PEOPLE • Friday at last! Tons of people working in Toronto don’t’ actually live in Toronto and are in a mad dash to get home. People sit for hours on end in traffic jams just like the pictures from before. There has to be a better way!? • Public Transit is the answer – Go Trains to Toronto. • Along with your elbow partner – think about what the advantages and disadvantages are for taking public transit as well as the advantages and disadvantages of driving your own vehicle.

  6. PUBLIC TRANSIT

  7. PUBLIC TRANSIT VS PERSONAL VEHICLE • Personal vehicles • ADVANTAGES - Comfort, convenience, privacy, • DISADVANTAGES – high cost of repairs, parking, and high cost of gasoline • Public Transit ADVANTAGES – can get work done, relaxing, sleep? DISADVANTAGES – smell, no privacy, busy, cramped

  8. PUBLIC TRANSIT TO WORK – TOP 6 CANADIAN CITIES

  9. USING PUBLIC TRANSIT • Toronto has been more successful than other Canadian cities in getting people to use public transit. The city’s public transportation system has operated street railcars since 1921, and completed the first stage of its underground subway line in 1954. In 2005, the Toronto Transit Commission celebrated its 25 billionth passenger. This total is about 4 times greater than the population of the earth!! • Way to go Toronto!!

  10. THINK IT OVER • What can a public transit company do to get more people to use it? • In your opinion, why would a person sit in a traffic jam when they could just take the Go Train home from Toronto?
