  1. Coolpave (TM) (with LEA) Open Graded Asphalt Mike Marsden Glynn Holleran Prepared for RNZ Asphalt Forum November 2010

  2. Outline • What is Coolpave(TM) with LEA? • OGPA design with Coolpave(TM) • Manufacturing Coolpave(TM) OGPA • Trials • Yard Trial • Network Trial

  3. What is Coolpave(TM) with LEA? • Manufacturing • Mix temperatures reduction • Reduce carbon footprint • Workability improvements • Eliminate fumes • Increase work safety • Reduce odours • Reduce green house gases

  4. Environmental Benefits • Reduction in production temperatures • 45 % reduction in fuel • Up to 50% reduction greenhouse gases • More than half Carbon Footprint • No smoke fuming • No odour when manufactured • 20 times fewer emissions and fuming in field • Ideal for urban areas with pedestrians • More pleasant for laying crew • Large reduction in use of release agent

  5. Environmental Benefits Standard Hotmix

  6. Constructability • Compacts easily as hotmix • Retains its workability for longer • More time for compaction • Good for long duration hand work, mix will retain workability • Can be placed in colder temperatures • Can be carted further • Improvement in longitudinal joints

  7. Technical Benefits • Anti-stripping • Compaction can be achieved on • stiffer mixes • colder temperatures • Longitudinal joints • Mix designs : Adopting AAHSTO R35 Addendum • All international research • Logistical

  8. Warm Mix Comparison

  9. Why in OGPA ? • First for NZ • OGPA generally fails by ravelling, this is a function of design, ageing of binder and maintenance of structural integrity • OGPA Coolpave(TM) with LEA oxidises binder less in manufacture • Can be used with Recycle polymer, SBS or straight bitumen

  10. OGPA Design with Coolpave • Design is same as with P/11 or P/23 design criteria for mix • Binder coats aggregate by wetting, wetting is determined by both chemistry and temperature • In Coolpave with LEA™ an additive that is similar in chemistry to antistrips BUT non toxic is added to give wetting and stone coating at lower temperatures • Moisture is added which foams the bitumen and improves workability • Mix temperatures are up to 40C lower than for standard OGPA

  11. Coolpave use in NZ • Auckland Motorway Alliance OGPA • CHCH City all mixes • CHCH airport- award winning work • Auckland Coolpave trials • Work in Dunedin , Marlborough, NH and Nelson. • Internationally millions of tonnes have been used in USA and Europe of warm and coolpave mix

  12. Trail 1 Yard • Ring Road Mt Wellington Plant • Laid by paver normal methodology • Laying temperatures and method optimised • No Odour • Crew reported laid satisfactorily • Normal rolling • Opened to trucks in 30 minutes • Laid in 25mm and 35mm layers

  13. 25mm layer

  14. 35mm layer

  15. Permeability & Sand Circle • Average Permeability 8.6 sec • Average MPD 1.27mm

  16. 10 Month Performance • Hammered by heavy trucks • Standing up well

  17. Field Trial – SH 1 Sunnynook to Tristram Interchange • Northern gateway to Auckland City • ADT 50,000 • 460 tonne pave 50% coolpave

  18. Field Trial – SH 1 Sunnynook to Tristram Interchange Permeability testing at 8 months Coolpave 10.6 sec Stand OGPA 9.3 sec (Spec 12 sec max)

  19. The Future • Annual Monitoring of high speed data and permeability test • 10/11 Pave 10% in Coolpave OGPA • 11/12 pave 20% in Coolpave OGPA • Look to introduce HDPE binder
