Social Media in Sandy • Pretty moderate user of social media • Currently use Facebook • Looking to start Twitter account soon • How we began • Started Facebook “test” page in January of 2010. • Had 76 fans after first day of fan page being created • Swelled to over 1,000 fans within two weeks.

How has social media changed business practices? • New policy • Decentralized policy on who can update the Facebook site • Centralized policy on how many Facebook pages are associated with the City • Policy governing what will be posted • Time Commitment • Additional item to update and monitor • New method for public notices • City Facebook page has had almost 37,000 views since its inception

  4. New opportunities with social media • Public Forum Announcements • Using social media as method for public announcements (Budget Committee) • Recruitments • Method for encouraging local talent • Emergency Updates • Wind Storm 2011
