  1. Think! • Write down a 4 line conversation that you had at breaktime. Call the speakers ‘A’ & ‘B’ and give them each a new line every time they speak. • Swap books with your neighbour. What do you learn about the two speakers through the language they use?

  2. Learning Objectives • All will learn what a TRANSCRIPT is. • Most will learn 4 / 5 / 6conventions of transcript writing. • Some will be able to begin writing their own transcript.

  3. Define • Transcript – what is it? • Prefix: Tran = across • Suffix: script = to write • Transcript: a written, typed, or printed copy or manuscript made by transcribing spoken language.

  4. Read • In groups, read and annotate the transcript. • What features of spoken language can you spot? Label them. • What is the relationship like between these two individuals? How do you know from what they say and the way they say it? Star Challenge – how manyfeatures can you spot? Do the speakers use formal or informal language? Fillers? Hedgers? Slang?

  5. Homework • What does this transcript reveal about the speakers and their relationship? • Write a paragraph.

  6. Watch • The following clip. • Can you write it up as a transcript?

  7. Learning Check • Write down 4 / 5 / 6 conventions of transcription.
