  2. Why do we need S.C.A.R.? Every year in this country around 19,000 cyclists are killed or seriously injured in road accidents. Accidents in the dark are more likely to be fatal. Numbers of injuries between 10-15yr olds shows that they are more at risk than all other age groups up to the age of 60yrs. There is evidence to suggest risky behaviour on the roads by this age group particularly males. Four out of five cyclists injured are male. (Figures taken from ROSPA July 2012) TOTAL POLICING

Crime figures for cycle thefts Currently Barnet Borough is suffering approximately 2-5 bike thefts each week. • Bikes are often abandoned by the thieves and never recovered to owners. • Thousands of bikes are recovered by Police every year but are not claimed by owners and they are not property marked. • Any unclaimed bikes are destroyed, sold in auction or donated to charity.   4. Lorry and bicycle accidents "(HGVs) present a particular danger for cyclists, especially in London where around 20% of cyclist fatalities occur involve an HGV. These often occur when an HGV is turning left at a junction’. About one quarter of accidents resulting in serious injury to a cyclist involved an HGV, bus or coach ‘passing too close’ to the rider."(ROPSA July 2012) TOTAL POLICING

  5. S.C.A.R. What is it? An after school event aimed at Year 7's. A training video designed by 14yr old's to push the message of safety and remind pupils of cycling etiquette and law. Finished by real life experience interviews from London Ambulance Service and the Police. A hands on training session involving the use of a lorry where teenagers can climb into the cab and see the issues effecting drivers. Free cycle marking. Free maintenance check by Evans cycles. With note home to parents / carers. TOTAL POLICING

  6. Pupil: What's in it for me?!! Training in cycle safety, Free maintenance checks and bike marking. Voucher for Evans cycles for discounted services and / or goods. Free front and rear lights for the bike along with reflective straps to improve visibility at night. Age appropriate cycle literature and cycle crime prevention literature. TOTAL POLICING

  7. Barnet Council school travel plans Some secondary schools in the Borough of Barnet do not have travel plans. They are unable to apply for funding linked to other plans. Travel Plans promote a safer sustainable way for pupils to travel. They improve relations between the schools and their neighbours and the schools environmental credentials. Pupils who arrive to school on bike arrive feeling awake and maintain better levels of concentration throughout the day. Schools could work with the schools travel advisors to include SCAR into the travel plan, benefiting pupils, schools and the environment. TOTAL POLICING

  8. Barnet Police: Benefits of S.C.A.R. Develop and build relations between teenagers and Police – an area which historically has room for improvement. Teaching by peer group on video avoids perceived "preaching" to teenagers by officers yet a brief introduction and personal stories maintain the human side of fatal accidents and remind them of the importance of safety / law. Increased data for cycle marking database to assist with recovery of stolen bikes. Crime prevention advice to assist in reducing bike theft. Safety advice to assist in reducing accidents. TOTAL POLICING

  9. Benefits to school Training for pupils by outside agency will encourage cycle use. Banner to promote SCAR project displays to the public that the school is environmentally friendly, and making efforts to improve safety and road etiquette. Inclusion on Travel plans to increase travel plan completion rates will ensure all schools have access to funding potentials. Improved relations between Police and pupils may benefit school when Police help is requested. TOTAL POLICING
