(Do not have a scribe and then copy later…that won’t help your grade) • Answer all question in your notebook • Before you have a question, make sure you read through this again. 1

  2. Warm-up • Visit the website at the bottom of the slide. See how fast you can identify the correct adaptations for the animals. In your warm-up box write your favorite plant or animal. http://www.ecokids.ca/pub/eco_info/topics/climate/adaptations/index.cfm 2

  3. Vocabulary (a reminder)(just read it over) Natural Selection – A process by which characteristics that make an individual better suited to its environment become more common in a species. Behavior (animal): A response to external and internal stimuli. Competition - the struggle betweenorganisms to survive as theyattempt to use the same limited resource. Predation- an interaction in which one organism kills another for food. Symbiosis – a close relationship between two species that benefits at least one of the species. 3

  4. Adapting to the environment • Go to the following website: http://www.cotf.edu/ete/modules/msese/earthsysflr/adapt.html • Summarize each of the following sections: • Adaptation • Environments • Environments change • Physical adaptation 4

  5. How do different kinds of adaptations allow organisms to survive in their environment? • Include in your answer: • Examples of variations in structures, behaviors, and composition. • Why organisms in similar environments may have similar adaptations. • Why organisms in similar environments may have different adaptations. 5

  6. Conclusion • 1. What types of evidence for evolution do we have? • 2. Why do species have a tendency to change over time? 6

  7. Change Over Time WEBQUEST • *THIS slide pertains to your webquest and handout distributed in class today (3/5/13). This webquest is due on THURSDAY. • Use the following website: http://www.biologycorner.com/worksheets/pepperedmoth.html to explore how environmental factors will affect the genotype of peppered moths over time. • Answer questions 1-5 in the last section, “Data and Analysis.” 7
