Interest growing in WLAN-3GPP interworking in two main areas: • RAN (Radio Access Network) • SA (System Architecture) Stephen McCann, RIM
RAN • Currently being discussed within 3GPP working group RAN2 • Work item description available at: • http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/tsg_ran/TSG_RAN/TSGR_58//Docs/RP-122038.zip • Addressing interworking of WLAN and Cellular traffic at the radio level. • Objective • Project intends to identify opportunities for improved 3GPP radio access and WLAN interworking, in particular through the use of extended knowledge at radio layers. Stephen McCann, RIM
SA: WLAN Network Selection • Release 12 work item on WLAN Network Selection for 3GPP Terminals • A study currently being discussed within 3GPP WG SA2 (work item code: WLAN_NS) • Work item description available at: • http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/tsg_sa/TSG_SA/TSGS_58/Docs/SP-120847.zip • Objective • The objective of this work item is to evaluate and if needed enhance existing 3GPP solutions for network selection for WLAN networks taking into account WFA Hotspot 2.0 solutions. Stephen McCann, RIM
SA: WLAN ↔ 3GPP EPC interconnect • Release 12 study on S2a Mobility based over GTP (SaMOG) and WLAN access to Evolved Packet Core (EPC) • A study currently being discussed within 3GPP WG SA2 (Work item code: FS_SaMOG) • Work item description available at: • http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/tsg_sa/TSG_SA/TSGS_56//Docs/SP-120426.zip • Objective • Solutions for providing connectivity between a 3GPP EPC and a trusted WLAN on the S2a interface using GTP. Stephen McCann, RIM
SA: Optimised mobility taking into account 3GPP RAT type • Release 12 study on Optimised Offloading to WLAN in 3GPP RAT mobility • A study currently being discussed within 3GPP WG SA2 (Work item code: FS_WORM) • Work item description available at: • http://www.3gpp.org/ftp/tsg_sa/TSG_SA/TSGS_56//Docs/SP-120261.zip • Objective • Identifying extensions to ANDSF ISRP and possibly ISMP policies in order to enable policy differentiation of 3GPP RATs (e.g. E-UTRAN versus UTRAN, GERAN vs. UTRAN) with respect to WLAN. • Studying how mobility between 3GPP RATs could be performed in a more optimised way taking into account the possible availability of WLAN.
