  1. You are a woman between 30-50 yrs. and..... • You have painful areas in the breasts • There are also vague lumps in one or both breasts. • These lumps cause pain especially in the premenstrual period • The lumpy areas and the pain are often noticeably less after the periods

  2. There are monthly hormonal changes taking place in every woman’s body • These hormones also have an effect on the breasts • The hormonal influences are often not uniform; they tend to be exaggerated in certain areas of the breast • This give rise to lumpy and/or painful areas in the breast

  3. Though tongue-twisting!, these are essentially benign and • Microscopically the lumps comprise of one or more of a number of pathological entities including: • mastitis, • cysts, • duct ectasia, • fibroadenomas, etc. • Collectively termed as Benign Breast Disease.

  4. The Big Question is: what is the relation between benign breast disease & breast cancer? ? • 80-90% of breast lumps are not cancerous (benign). • Fibroadenomas & simple breast cysts are not pre-cancerous conditions. • The majority of women with Benign Breast Disease are not at a greater risk of getting breast cancer. • A smaller percentage of women with proliferative breast disease especially atypical hyperplasia and in insitu carcinoma will have a higher risk of developing breast cancer. • Most symptoms of benign breast disease will subside after the onset of menopause • Majority of breast cancer cases occur after the age of 50, and it is uncommon below the age of 35

  5. Clinical suspicion of malignancy • Increased by: • Strong family history, • Suspicious clinical attributes, • Elderly age. • Decreased by: • Long, non-progressive clinical course, • Non suspicious clinical attributes, • Young age.

  6. Breast Lump Evaluation • Breast Self Examination (BSE), • where a woman examines her own breasts • Physician Examination: • done by a physician during a health check up. • Mammography: • Basically an x-ray of the breast, it can often reveal early changes leading to the diagnosis of very early breast cancer. • Biopsy: • where a portion / entire lump is subjected to microscopic examination
