  1. Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Smoke Warning Reliability in Aircraft Applications International Aircraft Systems Fire Protection Working GroupMeeting in Bremen on May 3/4th, 2000 Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000

  2. Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Problem False Cargo Compartment Smoke Warnings Consequences • Fire Extinguishing activation • Land ASAP • eventually Evacuation • AOG Case (Empty Fire Extinguishing Bottles) Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000

  3. Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Analysis • Non - fire case in the aircraft is not fully understood. The way to improve this is to identify relevant parameters for fire and non fire • More detection time (>60 seconds) could be necessary to check the warning situation and to confirm a fire • With a more reliable detection/signaling an increased level of safety can be reached Proposal Expand max. detection time of 60 seconds to approx 2 minutes ifenhanced fire recognition and confirmation procedures are used within the sensors/systems Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000

  4. Evaluation time window Evaluation time window Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Potentials for new fire detection instruments System needs internal evaluation time to confirm sensor signals Sensor Signal Fire Parameter 1 Fire Parameter 2 t [e.g. in seconds] t Non – fire case: Several Parameters (e.g. radiation, dust, gases) vary due to environmental conditions. Fire case: Parameters develop typically. In Multisensors, Signals are being calculatedover a certain period of time Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000

  5. Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Smoke Warning Reliability Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Problem False Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Consequences Fire Extinguishing activation, land ASAP, eventually Evacuation, AOG Background A330/340 Data: FLT phase: 25 Warnings / 2 real ones in 2.160.165 Fh Analysis Non - fire case in aircraft application is not fully understand Max. Detection Time of 60 seconds is not always sufficient Proposal Expansion of max. detection time of 60s under certain conditions Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000

  7. Fire Protection Fuselage Improvement of Cargo Compartment Smoke Warning Application Example: Recognition of smouldering fires in power plants Absolute Signal of two Sensors (SCO, SH2): High fluctuation due to variation in air flows Ratio of the two Sensors grows steadily. Decision no fire /fire dueto gradient evolution Doc. no. ESM/0305/05/00 issue 1 // Date: 02-MAY-2000
