  6. Opening a File • Insert the CD that accompanies this book into your CD drive. After a few seconds, if Windows displays a dialog box, click its Close button • Click Open on the Photoshop File menu and then navigate to the Chapter03 folder, and then double-click the file name House • When Photoshop displays the image in the document window, if the magnification is not 25% as shown on the title bar, double-click the magnification box on the document window status bar, type 25, and then press the ENTER key • Drag the window to the lower center portion of the workspace • If the rulers do not display, press CTRL+R • Click the status bar menu button, point to Show, and then click Document Dimensions Chapter 3: Using Layers

Saving a File in the PSD Format • With your USB flash drive connected to one of the computer’s USB ports, click File on the menu bar and then click Save As • When the Save As dialog box is displayed, type House Edited in the File name text box. Do not press the ENTER key after typing the file name • Click the Format box arrow and then click Photoshop (*.PSD, *.PDD) in the list • Click the Save in box arrow and then click USB (F:), or the location associated with your USB flash drive, in the list (Figure 3-3) • Click the Save button in the Save As dialog box Chapter 3: Using Layers

Creating a Layer via Cut • With the House Edited image displaying in the document window, press the D key • On the Tools palette, right-click the Quick Selection tool and then click Magic Wand Tool on the context menu. If necessary, on the options bar, type 15 in the Tolerance box and then click the Contiguous check box so it is selected • In the photo, click the sky • Right-click the sky • Click Layer via Cut on the shortcut menu Chapter 3: Using Layers

Resizing a Layer • If necessary, in the Layers palette, click the flowerbed layer to activate it • Click the Move Tool (V) button on the Tools palette • If necessary, click the Show Transform Controls check box on the options bar to select it • SHIFT+drag the lowerright sizing handle toward the center of the layer until the layer is approximately the size of the front porch of the house • Press the ENTER key to apply the transformation Chapter 3: Using Layers

Opening the Flowers Image • On the File menu, click Open. • When the Open dialog box is displayed, click the Look in box arrow, and then navigate to the Chapter03 folder on the CD that accompanies this book, or a location specified by your instructor • Click the file named Flowers, and then click the Open button • Change the magnification to 25%. Creating a Layer by Dragging a Selection • With the Flowers window active, if necessary, right-click the Lasso Tool (L) button and then click Magnetic Lasso on the context menu • • Drag around the red and dark pink flowers including some greenery. Avoid including in the selection the building behind the flowers and the ground below the flowers. Use the Add to selection and Subtract from selection buttons on the options bar, as necessary, to create your selection. If you make a mistake while selecting, press CTRL+D to deselect, then begin again • Click the Move Tool (V) button on the Tools palette • ALT+drag the selection and drop it in the House Edited window Chapter 3: Using Layers

Erasing Using the Magic Eraser • With the tree layer still selected, right-click the Eraser Tool (E) button on the tools palette • Click Magic Eraser Tool • On the Magic Eraser options bar, type 50 in the Tolerance box. If necessary, click the Anti-Alias check box to select it. If necessary, click the Contiguous check box to deselect it Chapter 3: Using Layers

Scroll to display the lower portion of the tree layer • With the tree layer still selected, right-click the Eraser Tool (E) button on the Tools palette, and then click Eraser Tool on the context menu • Move the mouse to a portion of the tree layer containing grass • Press the ] key several times to resize the eraser until the mouser pointer changes from a dot to a small circle Chapter 3: Using Layers

Do not drag across the tree or its trunk • Continue dragging, using the [ and ] keys to change the size of your eraser. Zoom in as necessary, to erase the majority of the grass and background bushes. Do not try to erase the grass showing behind the tree limbs • To delete close to the tree trunk, click the Mode box arrow on the options bar and then choose Block • Increase the magnification and scroll as necessary to view the trunk of the tree Chapter 3: Using Layers

Erasing Using the Background Eraser • With the tree layer still selected and the magnification at 50%, right-click the Eraser Tool (E) button on the Tools palette • Click Background Eraser Tool on the context menu • On the options bar, click the Sampling: Once button. Click the Limits box arrow and then choose Discontiguous. Type 25 in the Tolerance box and press the ENTER key. Click the Protect Foreground Color check box to select it Chapter 3: Using Layers

  48. Erasing Using the Background Eraser • Move the mouse to the document window and then press the ] key several times to increase the size of the eraser. Position the mouse pointer directly over a portion of the grass that still is displayed • With the cross directly over green grass, click and hold the mouse button. Slowly drag across the lower limbs of the tree • If any parts of the layer still need to be erased to display only the tree, right-click the Eraser Tool (E) button on the Tools palette and then click Eraser Tool. Adjust the brush size as necessary with the bracket keys and carefully erase small portions at a time Chapter 3: Using Layers

Repositioning the Tree Layer • Decrease the magnification to 25% • With the tree layer selected, press the V key to activate the Move tool • Drag the layer to a location left of the front door of the house, so the base of the tree is in the flowerbed (Figure 3-38). Part of the tree will be eclipsed by the left margin Chapter 3: Using Layers
