ABOUT US Due to advertisement and various types of cultural activities, which were broadcast by mass media, information about our 5-year old CI was spread in Armenia and the number of students increased. Nowadays we have 8 groups of the Chinese language, 1 HSK preparatory group, 2 groups of taiji quan and 1 group of qigong. In 2012 we had 3 language and 1 wushu teacher. Report 2012

  9. CI AT YSLU WORKING PLAN • Teachers of CI at YSLU represent their teaching plans. We use textbook of Robert Sem Chen “New practical Chinese reader”, which consists of 6 parts, with CD’s. • Textbook of Lishan Yu “My first Chinese reader” is used in children's group, which consists of 4 parts. All the books were provided by Hanban, Confucius Institute Headquarters. During classes additional teaching materials and interactive blackboard are used to make the process of learning efficient and fruitful. Report 2012

  10. CI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS • CI provides annual scholarship programs • In 2012 4 scholarships were provided. 2 of our students got scholarships to study in Beijing Language and Culture University, 2 – Shanxi University. Report 2012

  14. CI PERFORMANCES CI AT YSLU ORGANIZED A NUMBER OF PERFORMANCES ON THE CHINESE LANGUAGE, CULTURE AND HOLIDAYS Report 2012

  15. Chinese Traditional Tea Ceremony On January 20 CI organized Chinese Traditional Tea Ceremony, during which Liu Hong presented the culture of making and serving the different sorts of Chinese tea. YSLU staff, CI students and all the wishing had an opportunity to taste the real Chinese tea. Representatives of several Armenian Mass Media were present during the ceremony.

  16. Chinese Spring Festival On January 23 Confucius Institute at YSLU organized a painting contest, devoted to the Chinese Spring Festival. All the contest participants got books about Chinese legends, CDs on Chinese wushu and sweets as gifts.  Report 2012

  17. Lanzhou University Concert On February 13, a students’ group from Chinese Lanzhou University came to Armenia with a concert (organized for the 2nd time after the concert of Shanxi University group).

  18. “Career Day 2012” at Gyumri Confucius Institute at YSLU held traditional Chinese tea ceremony, which let many residents of Gyumri taste the wonderful Chinese tea. CI wushu teacher Liu Hong also performed an extract from Chinese martial arts, which interested the Armenians a lot.

  19. TV programs at “Armnews” We widely cooperate with Armenian TV channels. In February and March CI Chinese language teacher Lu Wei and Wushu teacher Liu Hong were guests at main informational TV Channel “Armnews”. Program about Wushu About the Chinese language Report 2012

  20. “I Ching, or Book of Changes” On Marchand April two lectures about the Chinese “I Ching, or Book of Changes” were conducted by Eleonara Manandyan and Feliks Khachatryan at Confucius Institute at YSLU. Report 2012

  21. On April 13 “Chinese as one of UN official working languages” activity took place at YSLU, which was organized by Confucius Institute at YSLU with the support of UN Armenian Office and PRC Embassy in Armenia. The activity was held for the 2nd time. Chinese as one UN Official Languages

  23. Wushu competitions in Armenia In May wushu traditional international competitionstook place at “Dinamo” sports hall in Yerevan. CI wushu teacher Liu Hong’s students also got prizes: Gagik Gasparyan from CI chang quan group won the 3rd prize and Vahe Khachatryan from CI taiji quan group was the 1st. Report 2012

  24. Joint meeting in Thailand YSLU CI Director Naira Grigoryan made a report with presentation on the current state and achievements of CI in Armenia. It is worth mentioning that Armenian Confucius Institute is one of first Confucius Institutes to have itsStrategic Development Program, which was approved by Hanban. 

  25. HSK exams In March Chinese International Proficiency Test (HSK) took place at Confucius Institute at YSLU. 16 students took part in the exam.

  26. Summer camp From July 24 till August 8 “Summer camp 2012” program took place in China, in which participated students of Confucius Institute at YSLU. They visited Xiamen, Beijing and Shanghai.

  28. Opening of 3rd Confucius Classroom On September 20 opening of Confucius Classroom took place at Ayb High School. It is worth mentioning that this class is the third one, as we have already opened Confucius Classrooms at school N 172 and N 43 at Yerevan.

  29. Moon Festival On September 29 Moon Festival was solemnly celebrated by Confucius Institute at YSLU at “Beijing” restaurant. Totally 200 persons took part in the activity.  CI students presented the meaning of the holiday in Chinese, recited Chinese verses and sang songs. The peculiarity of Moon Festival is Moon Cake and CI gave its students and all the guests an exclusive opportunity to bake Moon cakes by themselves. Report 2012

  30. CI students about China On October 2 in the frames of Chinese National Day, YSLU CI students who took part in 1-year scholarship program of Confucius Institute represented their reports as a PPT presentation on the theme “Learning process in China”. Report 2012

Meeting with Liu Jun On October 22, in the frames of International Children and Youth Film Festival, the member of China’s Film Association, Beijing Film Academy Library Director and Beijing Children and Youth Education Association Vice-President Liu Jun visited Confucius Institute at YSLU and met with the Armenian and Chinese students.

  32. 1st International Sinological Conference in Armenia On November 6-7, a great event took place at Confucius Institute at YSLU, Armenia. The international scientific conference on sinology entitled  “Armenia and China: 20 Years of Political, Economic, Linguistic and Cultural Cooperation,” dedicated to the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Armenia and China” was held ever in Armenia for the first time.

  37. China and Chinese Culture On November 13, the staff of Confucius Institute at YSLU was invited to School N 120 to participate in the activity, prepared by the pupils, in the framework of the 20th anniversary of Armenian-Chinese diplomatic relations' establishment. The participants made presentations on Chinese history and culture, told about the inventions done by the Chinese.

  38. Lectures by Professor from Iceland In December professor from Iceland State University Geir Sigurdsson conducted lectures about Chinese Qing-Ming Dynasty and Confucionism in Modern China at Confucius Institute and YSLU.

  39. 7th Confucius Institutes Conference From December 16 to 18, the 7th Confucius Institutes Conference, organized by Hanban, took place in Beijing. YSLU Deputy Rector on science and international affairs Lusine Fljyan made a report on the theme “Confucius Institute and Beijing Universities” and presented the nowadays situation at YSLU CI and the further development plan.

  41. Analysis of advantages and disadvantages in the process of CI development. Advantages: First only 10 students attended Chinese courses at CI. Great efforts, advertisement in media and various activities have attracted a great number of people to CI. The number of our students has increased reaching 120. Disadvantages: Teachers’ arrival on time is very important for CI students, as it is impossible to provide them with local Chinese teachers. Last year we had 140 students. After Wushu teacher had left for China, the number of our students decreased dramatically amounting to 90, as another specialist arrived only 6 months later.

  42. According to the previous graphics the students’ quantity is always unstable. After the 1st semester we lose students, as they consider the language learning process to be complicated. CI students number statistics (language)

  43. YSLU CONTRIBUTION TO CI YSLU provides place, special workers (room cleaners, guards, others), internet, stationary, heating, electricity, IT specialists, car, new Armenian governmental official computer system of paper signing and sending (Mulberry), etc. Report 2012

  47. FUTURE PLANS

  48. YSLU CI 5-year development program meets the requirements of the Recommendation on Confucius Institute Development and Planning, provided by Hanban.

Future plans 2013 CI at YSLU compiled a strategy plan for future development 2011-2015: • Opening of CI classroom at Gyumri, second largest city of Armenia • Compiling of Armenian – Chinese textbook • Organizing lectures by remarkable sinologists • Holding Traditional Chinese Tea Ceremonies • TV programs on Chinese and wushu (will be broadcast on Central Armenian TV) • Student exchange programs: education of the Armenian students in China and the Chinese students at Armenian Universities • Organizing internships for students in China via the undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and one-year language courses. • Publishing educational and methodological materials for the instruction of Chinese as a Foreign Language, wushu • Holding an wushu festival, contest of Chinese compositions • Celebration of CI 5-year establishment anniversary • Exhibition of Chinese Gohua paintings in Yerevan
